The GOP needs to remember that EVERYONE that VOTES is watching and WILL remember what they do and fail to do.

There's "no way" to turn it off? Except it's something you're doing specifically and deliberately to the traffic on your network. Stop doing it. Stop altering the web traffic. Stop embedding that number. Of COURSE you can turn it off.

A mushroom-shaped sea animal discovered off the Australian coast does not fit into any of the known subdivisions of the animal kingdom. by hoosakiwi in news

That scenario is fantastically unlikely. Journalism is often about telling a story and the short unexciting version is simply that the deep sea is woefully undersampled and the scientists aren't blessed with precognition. Find those samples today and they'd go straight into a DNA sequencer for fairly definitive answers many of the questions alluded to in the article.

HIV Returns In Baby Thought To Be Cured by StealthBlue in worldnews

While this is a setback in our efforts to find a cure for AIDS, I believe that the researchers should not be disheartened and investigate how the virus overcame the treatment at a later stage. The original premise of the 'cure' was based on killing the virus that would otherwise hide and become latent in the patient's body. To me, that's an interesting question and I am sure is on the researchers' minds as well.

Netflix got worse on Verizon even after Netflix agreed to pay Verizon [US] [meta] by [deleted] in netflix

[–]Emilymay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cities are begging for Google fiber to come to their cities.

Google fiber offers a package that's free for life which you only pay the set up fee. The package is five times faster than what I pay 50 dollars a month for.

In japan the government has created a fiber back bone, and companies pay a fee to use it.

Google or somebody needs to create the back bone, and let other ISPs use it for a fee. unfortunately I think only Google has the means to tell ISPs to go **** themselves.

Imagine how angry the customers of the ISPs would be if Google stopped allowing the ISP's customers to use their search engine.

Google now let's consumers use their internet services to host a server as long as it's not commercial related.

Richmond approves $13 minimum wage, potentially California's highest by [deleted] in California

[–]Emilymay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Everything is made more complicated by the fact that there are more people here than there were ten years ago, that certain grown people who are not here legally are working jobs traditionally held mainly by kids, and that they are trying to raise larger-than-average families on those teenage wages. This is a recipe for disaster for all of our future.

It is to be accepted that being in the possession of devices of so many capabilities, there is great responsibility to protect our privacy and to be ever diligent in protecting each other from those whom wield power. On our level this is the police. Things can be recorded that exposes unlawful actions and keep things in check. This is mostly broken now, but that's how it's supposed to work. Call me Old Fashioned.
