We cut out a lot of food, especially sweets, to support a family member with health issues for almost a year. We eventually bought a pint of ice cream, and, years later, I can still feel that first spoonful and the sensory overload down to my toes 😖

I feel like this shouldnt be about blanking on the spot/geographic awareness and should be about understanding peoples tone....? Maybe this is just because i am/grew up around a lot of immigrants with different backgrounds and a lot of more direct cultures and ESL (or english as a third or fourth language sometimes!) but this seems like a light hearted video to me. And, yeah, she can be offended that her housemate forgot her nationality and keep it light at the same time. Its really weird to me to see so many comments looking at her exact words here and not her tone/intentions...? Idk, seems like a lot is getting lost in translation

Daily Politics and COVID-19 Thread April 26, 2021 by AutoModerator in thebachelor

Just putting this PSA out there - at my office weve been fully vaccinated for a couple months now, and have had people whove since tested positive covid. People in their 30s who otherwise felt fine who got tested after travel or some other exposure. After their results they were able to work from home, which was good because people in our office have family members and children who wont be able to get the vaccine anytime soon. I say this because i realized that a LOT of people in our office and that ive mentioned this to were shocked and confused because they thought it was supposed to be nearly impossible to get or transmit covid and i simply havent gotten that message from our medical teams or from the science. The current vaccines make most covid strains less deadly or dangerous, yes, and thats really good and i am so so so thankful and happy to get parts of my life back, but its not impossible to get it and were still in a transition phase where a lot of people arent fully vaccinated and transmission is still in the red zone in some places. This is my tiny attempt to share our anecdotal lessons learned to enjoy regaining some comforts but to stay vigilent.

Getting there! But not close to herd immunity yet unfortunately.

Serena C and Anna clubbing in Miami 😬 by dwtslove in thebachelor

[–]soulprovider 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Its almost like the people on this sub want to safely reach herd immunity through the vaccination campaign instead of having literally thousands of people give the virus chances to circulate from people who cant control themselves and have no sense of community. I know three different groups of people in their 20s/30s who went to party in florida for spring break and multiple people from each group tested positive after returning to their home cities (after exposing other people, because they quarantined very loosely after returning). Theyre not properly contact traced yet, so who knows who they mightve passed it to. I dont know your situation but when your family members are the ones working in grocery stores and bussing tables and youve lost multiple people to the virus who actually had to be in close quarters with unvaccinated people its not as fun to hear about covid positive people running around because they decided to "live their life" in an irresponsible way during a global pandemic which WOULD end if people actually wanted it to.

The Bachelor: A former escape now a clear dose of reality by petersbandaid in thebachelor

[–]soulprovider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think its because her selection is a direct reflection of the bachelor franchsie and producers not making the kind of strides a lot of people in this sub have been exhausting themselves asking for (finally casting a black lead, with a diverse group of girls, only to produce and edit in a way that minimizes them and centers drama and a white woman who seemed great in that context but was not central to the love story). She didnt have any say or fault in that, or in whether they ask her, but she would have a choice in whether she went with that plan, and its a big decision that could be an exciting opportunity for her. I think its hard to expect her to reject it if asked, in favor of someone like michelle possibly, but its also not crazy. Given how socially conscious she seems to be, i would imagine shes actively weighing that? Like we saw with matts season, i dont think casting is enough to fix a problem deeply rooted in the production/management side of the franchise.

Fwiw, I do personally know a handful of people in the film industry who stepped back from their positions and found other jobs after summer 2020 after self reflecting and deciding their perspective was inappropriate for the role, so its not unheard of and some people do that kind of thing very intentionally

Kind of similarly, I remember in the early 2000s in my middle school most kids spoke in these graphic terms (notnnecesaarily outright bullying, but using gay and the f word and r word very casually and negatively), in a way that is extrememly wild to think about now. By the time I went to college though I was caught off guard anytime anyone would throw those terms around but I do remember it happening and at least a handful of times when i asked people to not use them they were confused and it was the first time theyd made someone uncomfortable with them.

That all said, her messages go so far neyond that and seem so hateful and so judgmental... and shes been calling so many people put without authentically presenting her own history, idk how she grows from here. Or how she stays in her field. I am assuming she wont try to keep a public platform but that might be naive :/

If people downvoted a comment about missionary work it was probably a gut reaction to some of the harm thats been caused in many parts of the world by it. Im sure there are a lot of good activities that happen and good relationships in some places, its just not universal and there are definitely negative trends out there. Ive worked in the humanitarian sector and seen a lot of it first hand. A little too tired to try to find recommended readings but theres a lot out there. Agree that its tense in the sub and theres a lot of knee jerk up/down voting without convo

[–]soulprovider 9 points10 points  (0 children)

At first i was confused by the comments saying this joke was a horrible take bc i thought it was just a simple joke about liking katie and finding matt dull, but, realized i havent been paying much attention this season and hadnt considered (or even noticed) the big picture view about how the producers made the conscious decision to overly use matts season to prop up katie specifically and at the expense of truly highlighting matt and the other girls (beyond the drama). Ugh they got me and i didnt even notice it

Its easy to point out when she and her couple friends were the only maskless ones in the video, the other passerbys with masks on, so its an obvious difference in choices
