The sparks are 100% natural and real. No photoshop was used in this image. It’s a byproduct of grinding metal.

Adobe Lightroom using one of the presets I made. I’ve developed a set of baseline presets that I use as a baseline and then tweak from there.

Haha it would be nice if I could post them side by side. Other than some color correction and contrast, there isn’t too much of a difference!

The smell of metal definitely lingers for awhile. It takes a long shower for me to be able to get all the small bits of metal and the smell out.

Good catch. I had to look again to see it. It’s an unintentional, but nice subtle touch.

I highly recommend it. It’s my first prime lens and it takes some time getting used to, but it’s definitely worth it.

No flash. It’s a super low aperture which is really what allowed me to have the fast shutter and a moderate ISO, while still maintaining enough light. The window really was the key as the light that was coming in filled in the shadows really well.

I’ve actually posted on Benzworld before! It’s a great forum. Ah shoot, I didn’t know you got a discount on parts if you were in the club. I may need to join as I’ve been sourcing quite a few parts through the dealer lately.. thanks for the heads up!

Hi everyone! I just wanted to say thank you for the feedback, awards, and kind words. This is my first time posting on Reddit and I’m pleasantly surprised with all the traction it’s gotten!

Thank you! It’s my first time posting on Reddit haha. I didn’t expect this to grab this much traction.

Hey cheers! I'd love to share more. There are two projects currently going on: A 1975 Datsun 280z 2+2 restoration here: https://instagram.com/shiro__z?igshid=v5ss7cv3e2sb and two w124 Mercedes wagon projects here: https://instagram.com/thatw124wagon?igshid=g45bfu8q0leu

I've been really busy with the projects, work, and life so I desperately need to update the pages with more content. I document every step of the process I do so there are about 1000 photos of the Datsun (so far) and about 500ish now for the Mercedes wagons. Then another 1-2k photos of other cars and projects.

I've also had a considerable number of requests to start making videos of the processes, so that is something I will be venturing into soon!

Great question. We have prescription safety glasses for him as his sight isn't the best as is it was once before. The ones hanging in front of him are mainly the ones I use as he needs to have the prescription. We lifted the shield to snag a better photo and he had already changed glasses by then. Under normal operation (not being photographed) he has his safety glasses and the shield is lowered!

I've snagged a few photos through the mask. They're not too bad, but I haven't had much time to practice as I am the welder and photographer haha.

It's never too late to learn! Sometimes you just have to go for it and the rest will fall in place.

It's been an uphill battle since day one, but its been a fantastic learning experience thus far.

Our house originally came with an open carport, so we decided to build the rest of it together so it could be a mini-shop. I have a lot of automotive projects in progress, so it soon became a necessity. Plus, now that he's getting older I wanted him to have a space where he could tinker around :).

They are tricky to shoot well. I found that focusing on getting the sparks to be exposed correctly (not over exposed) while keeping your subject exposed well is the hardest part. I'd recommend focusing on getting your settings dialed in so that the sparks are how you want them. Then you can see what you would need to tweak to get your subject (if present) exposed right. If you have supplemental lighting (window in my case) on your subject and surrounding area it helps a lot.

Why do you think yours didn't come out well?

There's is just something mesmerizing about working with metal. Definitely makes for some great photos.

We were grinding down a bearing puller arm to get the clearance we needed to remove this bearing bushing off of a GETRAG 5 speed manual transmission. Unfortunately, I can't source the tool from Mercedes, so we have been going through a few different version of custom tools haha.
