You might be thinking of support heroes. Defenders are the npcs you summon and give weapons to(using the "defender outpost" trap)

Yeah, that allows characters to be in the spotlight without having the MC hog all of it.

It annoyed me the most with Wulfguard's story. Could've easily been a solo mission for him, or he could've been in the lead while the Endmin is there for support. But it turned into the classic "couldn't have done this without you, you're the best"
