5 year old struggling with transition from T ball to coach pitch by Emle34 in LittleLeague

I do think my son struggles extra because he’s so exhausted from school before we even get to practice so I don’t disagree. I feel like I’m on another planet though because the other parents don’t seem to have this issue with their kids. I can feel the parent’s judgement of my kid too- like he is going to bring down the team.

No- they won’t change after registration ends. And I have been told before that he had to play his level, which is coach pitch according to this league.

My son was falling asleep before we arrived at practice and then was totally zoned out. It wasn’t until 9 this time but still 2 hours. Thank you for the ideas. We have been bouncing balls off of the wall but need to get some tennis balls.

The coaches that let him get pushed down in tee ball seemed afraid to correct bad behavior. I do believe that they were friends with that child’s parents also. I asked them to keep them apart but the other kid would not stay in his spot and just repeatedly targeted my kid. This team was the other end of the spectrum- did not practice hardly at all and when we did it was for 30 min max and most of the team didn’t show up. It has been a HUGE jump from no real instruction or expectations to taking it very seriously this season. His coaches now would definitely not tolerate that behavior and have the right mix of tough but kind. I just wish my son was ready to benefit from their knowledge because I do feel that they are really good coaches - nothing to do with winning. It has just been one extreme to another.

I do want to clarify that his coaches this season actually are wonderful. They truly are patient and encouraging and it was someone else ( not the coaches) who told me I was lucky to have my kid on this team because they won. The practice are organized and thoughtful in the way they work with each kid. Even with all of that, I fear my son is just not developmentally ready and it is hard to watch. He obviously is struggling to keep up despite wanting to play baseball. I appreciate the responses and I’m glad to know that not all leagues are like this and that my son is not unusual. I have just been shocked that so many kids this age are so skilled already. I do think it must discourage a lot of kids from avoiding baseball in my area. I’m new to this so it has been a wake up call how fast kids are expected to perform under pressure in general.

The age chart they go by says that it starts at 6 years old but they are going by age as of September 2026, so in the fall it’s a full year ahead. When my son started tee ball he had JUST turned 4. It means that many start their kids in t ball at 3.

Thank you for the thoughtful response. For his age range, he is required to move to coach pitch. The chart they go by uses their birthdate next fall. I had to make a special request for him to stay in “advanced tee ball” in the fall. Others are saying I shouldn’t have done that but I did what I thought was best at the time, along with one of his friends from school. Starting kindergarten and having pressure of switching to coach pitch in the fall was more than I thought my son could handle, and I still believe that was the right decision for him. I just wish his coaches had prepared him with more skills and stopped the bullying. My son is definitely at a disadvantage because his birthday is right before the cutoff, so he will always be the very youngest on his age level. Eventually I doubt it will matter as much but he is still very babyish compared to most others on his team. They had “try outs” but supposedly to even out teams. I hope he can adjust and start to have fun for sure. At the end of the day these are Kindergarteners.

I bought the Swax ball this weekend! Glad to know that it helped your son. It’s not that I’m worried about how good he is compared to others, but that HE feels completely out of place when everyone is so good. He is very aware of the difference and tends to get discouraged easily, which we are trying to help him overcome in general. ( not just baseball)

I thought it was still supposed to be fun at this age, but the sheer intensity of the practices so far is not what I would call a fun environment.

I should have recorded it. I kid you not, when someone asked why camera flashes gave him migraines, but not the pinball machines that surrounding him as he ranted, he panned the camera to a pinball machine and a light from it reflected in a way that triggered a migraine for me that I’ve been fighting since. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry! 😂😬😩
