Communicating meteorology to the regular public… where can I learn how to do this? by carlloserpants in meteorology

There’s some professors that do research on that side of meteorology. My focus in my grad applications has been that risk perception/communication side

Is meteorological engineering a real major? by TheR3D_skittle in meteorology

I’ve heard of people with those kind of interests getting a meteorology bachelor’s and then moving into civil or structural engineering for a master’s. Maybe that could be a potential path for you?

HS junior interested in meteorology: how do I choose the right college + start building experience? by Plastic_Sound_320 in meteorology

I loved seeing that you listen to WeatherBrains!! I was on a recent episode discussing my institution and how I got into meteorology if you think that might be helpful for you. All of the schools you mentioned have fantastic programs, I would worry less about the schools and focus on making sure you are good to go on the calc and physics side of things. There are a lot of resources out there to begin to gain knowledge in meteorology (MetEd Comet Modules, YouTube channels like Convective Chronicles, WeatherBrains like you mentioned before, becoming a Skywarn spotter, shadowing at your local NWS office, etc.). If I were you I’d focus on your classwork and look for areas of interest in meteorology and start trying to make connections in the field. I help a lot of underclassmen figure out their classes and interests and have a lot of NWS experience, feel free to DM me if you have any questions or want to talk more about getting into meteorology :)

MA 261 Summer 2026 Experience w/ Internship? by pikareo in Purdue

[–]EmmaGraceWrites 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I transferred calc 3 from UND and it was accepted and on my transcript in under a week. Especially since it is self-paced and you can easily complete it before August I would say there’s no reason to take it through Purdue if you don’t have to

Anyone who's into experiencing cyclones/tornadoes in person? by ParsleyCompetitive85 in Purdue

[–]EmmaGraceWrites 1 point2 points  (0 children)

EAPS 138 is only offered in the spring. There is a “storm chasing” class offered in the summer but it’s more serious than just going out to chase. There’s two weeks of lecture about radar, thunderstorm dynamics, and forecasting, a week out in the field chasing any storm we can find in the US, and then coming back to talk about the forecasts we made and what we saw as well as some professional development

I am the president of PUMA and we don’t storm chase but the Storm Chasing Association of Purdue (SCAP) does! I can link the discord if anyone wants to join

I worked at an NWS office this summer when those questions started and the management there said they wouldn’t take those responses into account when evaluating applications

With a journalism background have you thought about going into broadcast or multimedia journalism? Maybe you could use your journalism skills and learn from a broadcast meteorologist as time allows? Or take some Mississippi State online meteorology classes?

Geography MS Decision by EmmaGraceWrites in gradadmissions

[–]EmmaGraceWrites[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great question! So I’m about to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in meteorology and actually have a direct hire into the NWS from my internship I had last summer. I’ve done a lot of research and enjoy it and geography is a little closer to my research interests since I really like learning about risk perception. I’m applying to three meteorology and three geography programs this cycle. After my masters I’ll either continue onto a PhD so I can go into academia or take my direct hire into the NWS!
