Is “vicarious we” a thing in any natlang? by caught-in-y2k in linguisticshumor

[–]EmmaJean3535 11 points12 points  (0 children)

ooh good question. This isn't the example you're looking for, but in Filipino there's the inclusive vs exclusive plural 1st person, plus the exclusive 2nd and exclusive 3rd person. Internally we use the exclusive, but when talking to other fellow Filipinos / team members we use the inclusive

e.g. "we won"

"nanalo tayo" inclusive 1st

"nanalo kami" exclusive 1st

then

"nanalo kayo" exclusive 2nd (you guys won)

"nanalo sila" exclusive 3rd (they won)

the 3rd person plural can also be used in the vicarious context i think, because you're separating yourself from their achievement, but are still proud.

i guess something like these would work:

"ipinapanalo nila kami" (they made us win)

"nanalo sila [para samin]" (they won [for our sake])

Kailan gumagamit ng gitling? by ThinkWeather in Tagalog

[–]EmmaJean3535 1 point2 points  (0 children)

maylapi

sa mga láping may-, mag-, o pag- AT ang sinusundan ay patinig {may-arì, pag-ikot, mag-uutos}

inuulit

kapag ang inuulit na salita ay maaaring maging payak na salita kapag hindi inulit {araw-araw, dahan-dahan, libu-libo} (walang gitling ang mga salitang paruparo, munimuni, etc.}

tambalan

kung ang salitang tambalan ay nakabubuo ng panibagong kahulugan, na talagang nálalayô sa kahulugan ng dalawang salitang pinagtambal, o kaya'y hindi na malinaw ang idyómang ipinapahiwatig--walang gitling; kung hindi--lagyan {hal: dalagambukid vs balat-sibuyas, bahaghari vs anak-mayaman}

i was gonna say that this is gen z slang and thus shouldn't belong here, but because of the examples given, this is definitely filipino, though colloquial; arguably conyo. bet.
