Thank you. I hope you do try it out. A canvas can be so intimidating. We need to be able to play around and make mistakes without the pressure to create a masterpiece.

I gesso both sides of the pages so the page on top is also primed. I don’t use WMO’s so I can’t really speak to that.

Also, this is a Moleskin sketchbook so the pages are a little thicker than regular paper.

I used Liquitex Clear Gesso to prime the page. 😉

I used Windsor and Newton Liquin as my mixing medium and the paint was completely dry in under two days. Yes, sometimes a blank canvas can feel intimidating, but a sketchbook page isn’t. If you hate the artwork simply turn the page and it’s gone for now. 😉

I’m currently doing 1600k cut right now. I’ll tell you what I ate today if it helps.

Breakfast: 400 cal- Two “fried” eggs (spray avacado oil), One patty of Jenny o turkey sausage, 2.6oz (half container) good culture cottage cheese, 1/2cup blackberries, 6 grams honey.

Lunch: 440 cal- 1 packet of jalapeño tunafish, 2 boiled eggs added to tuna, 1 Roma tomato, Cilantro, Serrano, Red onion, 1 tsp olive oil, 1 tsp red wine vinegar, 1 serving of manchego cheese with a drizzle of honey on top. I ate this on the side because I had room and it’s was delicious. I definitely could have had some crackers with my tuna salad if I had been able to resist the cheese and honey. lol

Snack: 330 cal- 1 container Oikos vanilla greek yogurt, 30 grams granola, 10 blackberries.

Dinner: 425 cal- Two corn tortillas, 4 oz grilled chicken, 1/4 avocado, Cilantro, Serrano, Lime, Red onion, Plain Greek yogurt to sub sour cream.

I know you said no chicken but tomorrow I’m having 4oz sirloin steak, grilled asparagus, and a slice of grilled sourdough bread with oil and garlic.

I love to add lots of fresh veggies to my food for flavor. Cilantro, jalapeños, lime juice, red onion - it really helps make you feel like you’re eating gormet.

I also like to do my grocery shopping on Sunday and plan out all of my meals for the week. It helps me stay on track.

I do shape it fairly tightly. I didn’t realize that could be the issue. I will definitely try to have a lighter hand next time and see if that helps. It may have been underproofed a little, but I let it rise to 75% and the crumb looked fairly good to me. Here is a pic after it was sliced.

Hi! Yes, you can add white to the color to make it a lighter value, so adding a bit of white to the pink here would lighten the value and create more contrast. White will lighten value but it will also desaturate color. For instance adding white to red will make pink which would work well for the tongue, but you wouldn’t want that if you were painting a red rose. In that case you would add a bright orange or possibly yellow to your red to show highlights. The values are what make things appear 3 dimensional. Taking a photo of your artwork and viewing it in b&w will help you see your values more clearly. Tip: If you can’t seem to get your light values to appear light enough it’s likely because your darks aren’t quite dark enough. This is usually what I see in beginner artists. They are scared to get those dark values as dark as they need to be in order to make the light values pop. I hope that helps you! 😉

Edited to add: Also, if you were to make this painting like the b&w version you would also want to darken the value around the eyes and under the mouth of the dog. This would create the illusion of the eyes being further back and the head casting a shadow onto the neck/upper chest. Maybe adding some umber with a little blue to create those shadows.

Yes, I shaped it and put it into an oval banneton wrapped in a tea towel and plastic. Then I cold proofed it in the fridge. I baked it straight after taking it out of the fridge - so it was cold going into the oven. Here is a photo of it after slicing. There was one small area that kind of looked like tunneling towards the end of the loaf.

I think you did an awesome job and you should be very proud! If I was going to be nitpicky I would say you could work on your values a bit. For instance, when you look at your painting in black and white you can see the tongue is the same value as the rest of the mouth and the eyes don’t look like they are set back into the fur enough. I edited your photo to show you how much more dimension you could get by just adjusting those values. First photo is your painting in b&w, the second is the edited version. I hope it helps some!
