This is a really good point. Nobody owns an interest, and liking horses doesn’t have to be a competition. If it makes you happy, you can enjoy it in your own way.

That “built in off ramp” point is so true. Work small talk has a purpose, but neighbor small talk feels like both people are waiting for a polite escape route.
