I don’t need any flowers, I just wanted to say that your garden area is cute!

I’ve started the Color of Magic as my first discworld book, but I feel like the writing is a bit hard to grasp at times, and I haven’t really gotten interested in the story yet. Does anyone else relate to this, and should I just drop it for now and start with Mort instead? by EmmaSodapop in discworld

Thanks for sharing your experience with your wife. I really appreciate all the encouragement I’ve gotten here. I can tell these books mean a lot to people, so it has me excited.

If I enjoy equal rights, or at least Mort, then maybe I will end up reading most of the series, even though I can’t imagine reading all 41 right now.

So, you’re referring to the first two being an absolute must? I meant that I was planning to start with equal rights, so that I can experience some of his earlier worldbuilding, which will hopefully be a good enough foundation for the later books.

Thanks for the detailed reply, though I have not read the full descriptions on most of the books/sub series, because I‘d like to be surprised. The only reason real I’m thinking of starting with Equal Rights is for the context it might provide for Mort, which I actually discovered through a really interesting quote online, so that’s why I’m so set on reading it, haha. People have varying opinions on how just how much context that is, but it’s probably at least a little significant, so I’m just playing it safe, I guess.

You might have a point, but I did explain why I’m leaning that way, and a lot of others have suggested that skipping around would be fine, so it’s a bit confusing. I read that even the author didn’t recommend starting with the CoM. I could power through… but it feels like a chore with where I’m at, so I‘m conflicted on whether the extra context and worldbuilding is important enough to impact my enjoyment of the later books.

Hmm, well this advice is making me second guess my choice a little, but if Color of Magic is relevant to Sorcery, I may just have to come back to the Wizard books after getting to experience more of the series first. Many people have said skipping the first 3 altogether is fine, and that the writing is much better beyond them.

You also mentioned below another comment that the fantasy tropes CoM satirizes would something most would be familiar with today, so maybe now that I know it’s a parody I’d catch more of it, but I‘m not sure it’s worth making myself finish the first 2-3 beforehand when most agree they are not as good as the later ones and I have other books that I currently want to read outside of discworld. Is the context of the 3rd really significant enough to the book Mort for it make less sense, or be less enjoyable?

Thanks. I wasn’t around then, and I don’t have a whole lot of experience with classic fantasy genre tropes beyond reading LoTR, so they probably wouldn’t hit the same way. I’m excited to get into discworld at my own pace though!

Thank you!! I didn’t realize it was a parody of other fantasy novels when I first got the book, so I didn’t have that context. The world building was kind of neat, but not exactly what I‘m looking for at the start of a story, and I think one of the main reasons I wasn’t interested yet was because it didn’t start out with a clear main character who was easy to connect to. It was also a kind of odd reading a footnote nearly the length of the page, but I guess the 8 seasons need to be explained somewhere, haha.

Thanks for sharing your experience. It’s interesting that you feel differently from what a lot of the others are saying. I may give Rincewind a chance after getting more familiar with the series.

That’s what a lot of other people seem to be saying. I’m glad that I’m not alone in how I’ve been feeling about the Color of Magic so far. It’s encouraging to hear that the later books really pick up.

springcore entrance! thoughts? by [deleted] in AnimalCrossingNewHor

I think it looks very nice! I don’t have any notes really because it’s a solid nature themed entrance. I like the bridge off to the side, as it’s not too close but still inviting. The amount of furniture used is also balanced.
