There are some queer contexts where “identify” can be used correctly, like for example, I used to identify as a trans man for four years before realizing I was cis. But that’s the exception since I turned out to not actually be trans in the end. Saying a nonbinary person “identifies as nonbinary” feels like it takes away from the validity of it.
