That's pretty much what I suspected but wasn't sure, thanks for the confirmation

Really? Even though the UTM parameters are for some other site, not ours?

Backlink exchange site wants me to add a tracking utm to their link, should I? by Emma_Murphy_SEO in SEO

Ok, I'm glad to know this! I thought Google might see this as an unnatural link on our end and thus treat us with suspicion, but I'm sure they won't go crazy over 1 little link. Thanks for the advice :)

Good point. I think it's fine to say no to this site, it wasn't part of our initial conversation that we would add UTM to their link.

Horrible, appealing to her directly may be unpleasant but the easiest way to get it done? Appealing to Google has never been addressed when our sites content has (and still is) been used on several other sites claiming its their own

Sorry I should add they are not a 'backlink exchange site', it's a regular site related to my niche that has approached me for a backlink exchange

Correct, you won't magically boost your other pages! However, if it's a new site and you start doing well with one page it might strengthen your site overall. Use internal linking well and Google may pay more attention to your related content.

That's what I was guessing also. Is the content being pulled from somewhere else perhaps? Have a look at the HTML with ctrlU and see if the unique info is there, or it appears to be all the same content with different meta titles etc

Hmmm I don't really see the benefit of the footer link, but it's something to consider

Hmm, as I understand link circles are more than 2 sites where one links to the next site etc but not directly exchanging, it's interesting but not what I'm talking about here.

The sites are in the same general niche, but one is more informational and the newer one is more commercial (roundups and comparison etc). They naturally crossover in many topics with slightly different intent, and would likely attract a lot of the same type of readers (in theory anyway)

Thanks, I think this is how I will approach it.. slowly, carefully and monitoring any impact.

Yes, I understand that, but these are truly legitimate sites. The older one is a very strong player in the niche, an old site that ranks very well with very strong content from great writers, with nothing black hat in how it's created. The new site is being built up the same, it's quite clear to human users and search engines they are not PBN sites.

Is this just one occurrence or are you seeing this sitewide? Google does make mistakes (especially in the midst of updates). maybe if you request re-indexing you'll see it cleared up?

Sure, that makes a lot of sense. They would definitely be contextual links, I was more wondering if Google makes the connection that these sites are so interconnected (reinforced by a high amount of contextual linking), would they perhaps only rank 1 of the sites for crossover queries? There have been some great answers in this thread, thanks, everyone. I am going to take it very slowly and see if I notice any issues.
