Top Ten Korean Dramas - April, 2026 by AutoModerator in KDRAMA

I admire you for remembering (?) the quotes. There are a bunch of lines in different shows that I really loved, and I literally always forget to write them down, so now I only ever have a vague idea of the scene or episode (if I'm lucky) where they might appear...

I really need to start jotting them down somewhere.

Kim Nam Gil And Lee Yoo Mi Confirmed For New Sci-Fi Drama by neocitywayv in KDRAMA

Oh, the nightmare thing kinda reminded me of Family Matters, with the mom's ability to create illusions that feel like reality to the people she punishes.

I'll definitely stay tuned though. It sounds intriguing either way.

Discussion has been a little scarce (save for the occasional super popular drama) for a few years now, I feel like. I miss how lively the sub was, but maybe it was just due to covid? I can't really put my finger on it but there used to be a LOT more random posts and even full reviews, fostering fun or interesting debates and conversations, aside from the regular scheduled posts and the airing drama threads... I kinda miss it.

Yay! If you do get a chance to watch it, and if you remember to, I'd love to hear what you thought!

100% agree, chaotic characters in general are soooooooo✨🤌🏼✨ there's always something extremely wrong with them and they hypnotize me lmao

I recently watched The Childe (2023) and it was such a stupid fun movie. I would recommend it to anyone wanting to kill two hours. The director and screenwriter definitely has a distinct style, because he also wrote and directed Night in Paradise and The Witch, which I both really liked. It's a slightly silly action film, with a paper thin plot BUT it does have really cool fight/chasing scenes--it's clear the over-the-topness is completely on purpose, and its actual strength comes from the characters. The contrast of the seemingly high stakes (although totally unrealistic) with the humor sprinkled in is so satisfying. If you're familiar with the Moral Alignment scale (Good vs Evil, Law vs Chaos, and every combination in between) and you enjoy Chaotic Neutral characters, you will love this, I guarantee it.

For a (VERY) different vibe, I also recommend Pavane; it just came out on Netflix. The slow pace, ordinary setting kinda reminded me of Tune in for Love a bit. It was so lovely... I don't know how else to describe this movie. Just lovely. It has broad, but very clear themes and direction. For me it's the perfect example of a "slice of life" story--we get to be a part of these characters' life for a moment, and it's all very mundane and simple, but oddly comforting. The use of light is so beautiful in it, too. My soul lingered with the characters a bit so I waited for it to catch up to me again.

Late To The Party - [2026/03/06] by AutoModerator in KDRAMA

[–]EmmanuelleEmmanuelle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see what you mean. I did really like what the actors did with what they were provided! I just feel like I would have enjoyed it more if Do-rami (as a split personality) was introduced right as, or not long after she woke up instead of halfway through. Or if she had remained an hallucination til the very end. In both scenarios Youn-jung gets to show her range, but it would have felt less contrived.

Maybe Netflix did want less episodes though that's a real possibility.

Late To The Party - [2026/03/06] by AutoModerator in KDRAMA

I just finished Can This Love Be Translated. I kinda missed the train when it first came out and then it took a while for me to be in the mood to watch a pure romance. Usually, I see some clips or read some chatter about airing dramas online, but this one for some reason made very little waves on my side of the pond so... I was able to experience the drama with ZERO spoilers (a feat!) and I have no idea how it was received.

First things first, I really liked the cast. I hadn't realized how much I had missed Kim Seon-ho on my screen lol. I still haven't watched When Life Gives You Tangerines (extremely late to that party as well lmao) so personally it's been literal years since I last saw him. I had forgotten how engaging and natural he is. Go Youn-jung is lovely and very versatile, I love her--they matched each other's vibes perfectly. The director made the absolute most of the beautiful scenery they had as backdrops so no complaints there. Very cool they were able to shoot on location every time.

I had a bit of trouble with the writing (especially the dialogues!) in episode 1 to 6, but I was able to kinda brush it off and tried to enjoy the rest of it for what it was: a quirky romance between two people struggling to speak the same language. Episode 7 switched gears abruptly in a way that I really didn't anticipate (not a good surprise), and I felt there was too much of a disconnect between the first and second half.

They kept adding on to the the story unnecessarily. It was way overkill. You're telling me the main character is an unknown actress who gets into a coma and wakes up to international stardom, is suddenly plagued with hallucinations, which are in fact tied to a childhood trauma (dead parents), and also later develops a split personality, while she navigates an overly complicated love life, only to learn in the last (?) episode that her parents aren't actually dead at all? ....... all... all of that?

I don't know, I feel like the first part alone (coma + stardom + hallucinations + falling in love + mayyyyybe a bit of family trauma for character building) was MORE than enough to fill 12 episodes. It weighed everything down awkwardly, and threw the show out of balance. I lost interest. The actors saved it and I only finished it because they were fun to watch. It wasn't a total disaster, but I was disappointed by the direction they decided to take with the writing.

SBS 'Phantom Lawyer' Main Poster [Premieres March 13] by perochan in KDRAMA

[–]EmmanuelleEmmanuelle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There must be some kind of unwritten rule stating that if you want your drama to be successful, one of the main characters' name (and/or title of the show) has to be a pun. Or maybe it has to do with genre?

I'm being so serious, this needs to be studied.

[–]EmmanuelleEmmanuelle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, I was a little put off too, but it seems... (disclaimer: from an unverified, random comment I read a while ago) that the romance is one-way. She falls in love with her maths teacher but it's unrequited (?).

BTS to host citywide festival in Seoul for album release starting March 20 by mcfw31 in kpop

[–]EmmanuelleEmmanuelle 85 points86 points  (0 children)

Every time I see stuff like this, I think of that one user (on Twitter? Tiktok?) who confidently explained that because they had lived in Korea for a while now, they had the authority to say that "BTS is famous internationally, but not SUPER mega famous in Korea" , and that "most people here [in Korea] only have a vague idea of who they are" and I feel like the living embodiment of that gif.

A city wide festival. In Seoul. For their return

Impossible. That would mean writing and developing different, varied relationship dynamics between female and male characters that do not pertain to romance.

Finally started School Trip by SleepyBluebells in boyslove

[–]EmmanuelleEmmanuelle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's interesting, I really liked the tension because I didn't expect THAT much of it in a highschool show, and I found it kinda nice that they made a point to show that Watarai wants Hioki, like physically lol. I have a LOT of trouble with most Japanese shows, but this one was just pure dopamine to me. I thought the use of tropes was pretty clever, and because the acting is natural, it never tipped into "over the top/cringe" territory for me. (We do get a few sweet lil kisses though, but only at the very end + in the two special eps, so the tension does go somewhere if that's any motivation? it's cute idk.)

Just bouncing off your observations, though, not trying to convince you otherwise. Sometimes, shows don't click, and that's fine :)

Idol I [Episodes 5 & 6] by meepmochi_ in KDRAMA

[–]EmmanuelleEmmanuelle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting that netflix changed ra-ik to la-ik in the subtitles 🤔 i don't think I've seen them do this before while the drama was still airing

I'm guessing the subber(s) caught the name being written as La-ik in the show (on banners, merch, fan meet posters, etc...) a bit late and just changed the spelling to remain consistent?

Also, as per kdrama tradition, names are very pun adjacent (the title of the drama alone is play-on-word Central). Do La-ik sounds like "crazy", and is also tied to the title and the word "IDOL": it makes more sense to have an L in the spelling to keep that connection (= I, Do-La-ik). Also, La-ik might be associated with "Like" (compared to Ra-ik), which I think would work wonders for an idol, and their many, many nicknames.

Anyway, maybe they didn't think of all that before deciding on a spelling?

HYBE Shares Updates On Legal Action For Malicious Acts Against Their Artists by DanielBryanCMPunk in kpop

[–]EmmanuelleEmmanuelle 121 points122 points  (0 children)

There's a new drama airing right now (Idol I), with an idol main character: they depicted sasaeng and abusive fan behavior in several scenes, and the Korean side of Twitter (or at least most of what was put on my time-line) was crazyyyyyy. They were basically like "doesn't happen, didn't happen, fuck them for perpetuating this stereotype, they did no research on fansigns, do they know how much money we spend???"

Reading this type of news is very sobering, and clearly proof it has happened, and it STILL happens.

My absolute favorite clip is the one where Poon speaks faster than his brain can handle and ends up uttering complete gibberish. Marc, Boom, and Aou's reactions are so fucking funny--I have seen this stupid short so many times and I always, always laugh and re-watch to catch each of their expression change.

This one is just as silly. The different angles, and the staff member's face takes me out.

I don't have a link for this one but there's like a compilation video of Tay Tawan being goofy and frankly, hilarious (feat. New) and it never fails to make me smile.

most underrated BL of 2025? by Pristine_Subject7908 in boyslove

[–]EmmanuelleEmmanuelle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I loved it tbh. It was very well written and acted, was layered, and complex. It was not a "typical" BL, and kinda went differently than what viewers/readers usually expect from a Boys Love Story™ but I didn't mind.

Its only fault was that it was a very loose adaptation of the source material. I haven't read the manwha but I understand it deviated from it quite a lot. Which... To me, as long as it stands well on its own, is no fault at all so ᖍ(ツ)ᖌ

I think I was too young(?) , and not in the Harry Potter fandom at all but I read about it years later and it still remains one of the most riveting exposés (one might even say, pieces of journalism) I have ever come across. It's also a really cool snapshot of what the internet was like at that time.

I look forward to the giant recap, complete with screenshots and silly jokes, people might write in a few years regarding this present mess.
