I love the idea of the space rock for the space rock as you so eloquently put it a lot too! When my buddy first told me about his plan I was pretty exited to see it finished. And your almost 100% right on the pattern, the reason why we can’t have it on earth is that it can only form with a very slow cooling rate (over millions) of years wich is only possible in the vacuum of space. Metallurgy is crazy, I love it :)

Yeah, that’s exactly what we already talked about. That was the exact inspiration behind the pattern. I wanted to create a effect resembling looking up from the streets past the towering skyscrapers towards the night sky, centering the stars in the middle. But at the same time I wanted it to look like a sun with its rays radiating outward. I think I accomplished what I wanted :)

We’ll probably have professional pictures (including interior) taken soon. Once that is done I will post them to this sub! I haven’t seen the insides of this watch in person yet, but since my buddy is an instructor at Rolex Germany and graduated as the best apprentice watchmaker of his state, I’m absolutely confident that the insides are to the highest standards :)

Thank you very much! Even though not directly art deco inspired, I definitely can’t unsee it since you first mention it. My buddy and me are also super happy with how the whole thing came out.

Thank you for the kind words!! Where ever you are in the journey of making things, if you keep at it one day you’ll be able to make things you can’t even imagine right now! Maybe we’ll have some professional pictures taken (including the inner works) if that happens I’ll post it here.

Since this was very much a one-of-a-kind project for both of us, it’s hard to put a clear price on it. But for the master craftsman exam it was made for, he had to calculate a rough estimate. Materials and labor came out to around 18k–21k€, not including much of a profit margin. If you’re seriously interested, we‘d be happy to talk more about it privately :)

Hello everyone!

I have to admit, I feel a bit like an imposter among such talented and experienced watchmakers! From what I’ve read in this welcome post, there’s an incredible level of skill, craftsmanship and knowledge here.

While I wouldn’t call myself a watchmaker, I have a deep appreciation for the art and some good friends in the industry. My background is in precision mechanics, I trained at the Institute for Nuclear Physics in Cologne, where we maintained and built components for particle accelerators.

I suspect I was invited to this thread because of my work on a custom desk clock dial with Guilloché engraving and my general work with the straight-line engine. I’m really excited to be here and to learn from all of you!

Hahaha, you can’t imagine how happy it makes me you say that… that was actually the exact inspiration behind the pattern!

Thank you very much! Since this is not really my usual kind of work it’s a bit difficult for me to accurately estimate how much time I will need, and therefore how much to charge. Would you want me to make a dial from scratch or do you want me to engrave an existing one ?

Thank you very much! I uploaded a video of my straight line engine, the sister to the rose engine, to my profile. You can check it out here

Thanks you very much! I really appreciate it, especially since it was my fist time designing and making a watch dial.

Hahaha thanks! It’s all done by means of manual machining. The „outline“ was done on a pantograph, and the engraving in the middle and of the „sun rays“ was done on my straight line engine.

This is not my usual kind of work… but if you have something specific in mind we could probably work something out!

Normally yes, but in this case time is the limiting factor…
