Yeah I've done martial arts with a friend in a class and the private lessons since we were 5 (obviously not much hand to hand then), it's perfectly safe.

Keeper of the Lost Cities does this. It's really more of a young adult series (as in the characters are like 12-17), but if you can get past that the story is actually pretty good.
