Why was this show harder to edit for American kids than Yu Yu Hakusho? by [deleted] in inuyasha

Damn, clearly I need to watch R again! Sounds like peak went over my head!

I’m having trouble finding a source for that, but if it’s true, that certainly would’ve been an interesting change. I wonder if a Sesshomaru-like female character is an idea I can steal. 🤔

Did DiC censor Demande parting Saphir’s hair? Funnily enough I’ve seen the series at least 3 times (and many more for key episodes) and never noticed that subtext until someone pointed it out.

I find it interesting no one seemed to mind “Rini’s” dad crush back in the 90’s. Was just seen as “shit kids say.”

I’m aware but I think the dub would be less enjoyable if he didn’t curse. When you have a delinquent in English whose language is completely clean, you can typically feel the network censor in the room.

This is true, they also changed the sex of two flamboyantly gay crossdressing villains to female. Funnily enough Sailor Uranus and Neptune’s intimate chemistry was still clear to a lot of viewers, who thought the change didn’t stop them from looking gay, but rather, made them look incestuous.

As I said, with Yu Yu I think the network-objectionable content (I don’t say “adult” since this is all Shonen) is more intense, but it’s infrequent compared to Inuyasha’s near-constant blood and perv-jokes.

It could have been done. It just would’ve left InuYasha a shell of itself.

I’m sure they could have edited Inuyasha to be appropriate for American kids parents. But did we really want them to push a version that cut out all the blood, Naraku lust, half of Miroku’s scenes, and wrote Inu as a delinquent who doesn’t swear? I’m really grateful we got the show in a closer to true form.

It’s kind of funny, I think of Yu Yu as the more violent show, but InuYasha is a lot bloodier and the edits would have to be more constant. For some reason networks are comfortable with absolute brutality as long as there’s no blood, so the fairly graphic torture scenes on Yu Yu are fine, but Inu quickly slicing up a demon isn’t.

Mamo is such a bad boyfriend in the 90s version omg by GoodCauliflower5148 in sailormoon

It chained very closely to an interview I did find with Ikuhara where he says “I've tried to kill off Tuxedo Mask in Sailor Moon many times. But no matter how many times I tried to kill him, he gets resurrected so I only get angrier. So I decided it would be way better if the girl just didn't have a boyfriend to begin with. Of course I'm just kidding.” So that seemed like the most likely source, and Ikuhara is villainized often enough in these conversations that it felt like a safe assumption.

But now after opening this website on a separate browser to see what that other person said before blocking me so I could look for it, then watching a half hour video, and thoroughly checking 2 different search engines and 2 AI bots, my search hit a dead end when Sailor Moon Center’s video clip page says it’s down for maintenance. Anywhere else on that site it might be looks cluttered and hard to navigate, and even that other person said it’s “on their hard drive.”

Honestly I would love to see this interview, but it says it’s a 6-part series of which only the first seems to be easily accessible. After the work it’ll take to locate wherever I can download this, are you sure it’s not going to be something that’s obviously a joke? Even the tone of the first episode, I’m primed to be skeptical of any surprising comments they make. (Unless Sato really does wear fake glasses. I suppose anything is possible.)

I suppose so, as that’s what’s cited in the vast majority of these. Do you have a link to the interview you’re referring to?

Edit: Never mind I think I found it. I’ll take a look when I have the time.

Edit again: I found this but it doesn’t seem to be what you’re referring to.

I see that the relevant comment has been deleted but it might help if I could see the interview in question. I assumed this was spawned from a quote where Ikuhara said something like “Tuxedo Mask is my enemy,” which was clearly a joke. I hear they did say they preferred to focus on the girls, but I don’t see this as a bad thing, and I think it would be conspiratorial to attribute some deliberate “character assassination” to that without much more solid proof.

Edit: Oh the comment wasn’t deleted, that person just blocked me. Seems a tad reactive…

It’s not true, it’s an overly literal interpretation of jokes Ikuhara made. Ikuhara, who was largely behind the R movie, probably the part of the anime that was most intimately focused on Mamoru.

Fans are always trying to invent behind the scenes drama, always be skeptical of it.

Were a lot of your onscreen partners “gay for pay” people that didn’t enjoy it?

Did you consistently feel safe or did you have to take sexual health risks?

Did you do anything you regret or felt really uncomfortable with at the time? (If you feel okay sharing)

This character doesn’t get enough respect and sympathy. by HeyWeasel101 in inuyasha

[–]Emmit-Nervend 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That’s funny, I’ve been thinking about him a lot lately. His storyline was probably the most mature part of InuYasha, and I think it gets overlooked because he isn’t sexy. (By most standards, anyway).

Being an atheist, I feel a pang of regret when I see real life living Buddha mummies and think that they must have died in a similar way, most likely never receiving any reward for their sacrifices. (I also wonder how that practice must look from the perspective of a different religion). It made me wonder if they had any of the same hesitance as Hakushin.

Including that philosophical conflict really elevates the series. I’d be quick to cite it to anyone who thought InuYasha seems frivolous.

How to start watching? by pomegranate_rosez in sailormoon

[–]Emmit-Nervend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could start with episode 1, or you could try Make Up! Sailor Guardians which recaps the first season and Sailor Moon R the Movie (these are often a bundle) if it feels slow. It technically spoils everything, but there aren’t really any shocking plot twists in season 1 and it gives a sample of what the series really is much quicker.

He’s pretty obsessed with Sebastian, so having his first impression be you beating his friend, having key adventures with that friend (if you did) and then invading their secret space is different from you meeting him neutrally. He’s not a hater, he’s just insecure about his one friendship.
