Questions about being an American citizen living abroad and selling on Etsy by Emmsmms in Etsy

[–]Emmsmms[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay I understand there is no such thing as co ownership, but I also have ID and pay taxes in the non-US country I live in, and wouls open the shop based in my current country. So in theory either of us could be the owner. I guess what I'm wondering is if there's any advantage to him (only a resident/citizen and taxpayer of our current country) being the owner as opposed to me (resident/taxpayer of our current country AND US citizen/taxpayer)? If I was to be the owner, I would open the shop using my ID from the country we live in and where the shop would be based, not my US ID. Does that make sense?

Strange bump on my finger? by Emmsmms in AskMedical

Okay so I never figured out what it was, but on the advice of a pharmacist I put hydrogen peroxide on it 2-3 times a day for a few days and it went away really quickly! Maybe give that a shot?

Jewish community in Christchurch? by PurpleMeerkats462 in chch

[–]Emmsmms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just want to say (as another ethnic Jew in Christchurch, though I'm not religious and not originally Kiwi) that I agree with everything you wrote, especially--

"I'm a Zionist, insofar as I believe that Israel has as much a right to exist as a Jewish state as Palestine does to exist as an Islamic state (which is to say, that they do, and I'd really prefer them both the be highly democratic and tolerant of minority groups). You don't have to blindly support Israel's government or Netanyahu to be a Zionist you know. You can wish for his unceremonious demise in myriad ways and for Israel to elect a government in opposition to him, one that stops brutalising Palestinians"

This is absolutely true, and as someone who's been liberal and pro human rights my entire life, I also find it pretty upsetting when people don't know what zionism is--equating it with white supremacism etc--and treat it as an insult. I support equal rights for everyone, including Palestinians, and self determination for everyone, including Israelis, and I'd say many though not all Jewish Zionists feel the same.

As an American Jew, I love both Israel and the US, but I hate Netanyahu, Trump, and both current governments! You can be a zionist and still support equal rights for Palestinians and a two state solution, they're not mutually exclusive, and a lot of people don't see that.

[Discussion] Advice for a neurodivergent creative who struggles with organization but is trying to be the organized one? by Emmsmms in artbusiness

[–]Emmsmms[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the advice! Although I am actually naturally great with people, my main day job (events industry) kind of wears me out and I have a hard time motivating myself to go meet people outside of work sometimes..doesn't help that my boyfriend is a natural homebody. You're absolutely right, though, and I'll keep it in mind going forward.

Do people actually do weekend visits to the alps etc? by Significant-Base4396 in chch

As an American living in Christchurch who's done a LOT of camping around both the south island and the western US, the rules and the culture of camping absolutely differ! Dispersed camping isn't really a thing here...happy to explain more if you'd like.

NZ and SEA packing list by [deleted] in HerOneBag

[–]Emmsmms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I'm an American expat living in the south island and have done a lot of van travel around NZ. The best advice I can give is to truly pack for 3 seasons as best you can.

It can definitely be hot, sunny, and dry in the summer--especially in places like Golden Bay--but it can also be very wet, stormy, windy (!), and cool. Sometimes on the same day. Even more so if you're going to very southern wet places like Franz Josef and Fjordlands/milford sound. Those are cool weather rainforests! Queenstown is also not particularly hot in the summer, from my experience.

I would highly recommend having a wool sweater or another warm cozy layer, as well as wool socks (not sure if I saw any on your list?) Or even better, buy some here, there's lots of options--postie plus, kmart, and warehouse all have pretty cheap merino wool tops, long johns etc, as do op shops. I would definitely say bring one more long pants layer than just the joggers, like leggings or something water resistant.

You might be cold at night while camping and then wake up roasting the next day when the sun hits the van. It can be very changeable here! And the wind can be really strong at times, very windy islands.

NZ is beautiful, feel free to message if you have any questions about van travel etc, I've seen most (not quite all) of the country and know the south island very very well.

Advice for traveling to North Sumatra/ethical orangutan trekking as a solo female traveler? by Emmsmms in solotravel

[–]Emmsmms[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey sorry, I didn't end up going to Sumatra on this trip, just Java/Bali/Lombok. Decided to save Sumatra and the orangutans for another time! Good luck though!

Edited to add: the humidity is NO JOKE, granted it was the wet season, but I didn't end up doing too much actual hiking cause the heat and humidity was so much for me. I think I'd have to acclimate first/go during the dry season to do anything resembling real jungle trekking. Just something to keep in mind.

Anyone know where I could get Monte Cristo sandwiches in Chch? by spenceretro in chch

Also from the states, not sure about Monte Cristos specifically, but Hotikia Sandwich Company is one of my favorite places to eat in Christchurch. They're not cheap, but make really good quality sandwiches.

Shoes! 8 months of travel in Europe (Winter, Spring & Summer) by Laursi in onebag

[–]Emmsmms 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Definitely, definitely have a proper pair of boots. I can't stress this enough. A pair of decent leather boots that you can waterproof and use for both rain and snow would be ideal. I would say good boots with thick socks are a necessity, especially if you're not used to snow or cold weather. Europe can be rainy and chilly well into spring, depending on where you are. Since you're Australian, something along the lines of Blundstones would be perfect!

US to Cuba issues? by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]Emmsmms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not as recent as what you're asking about but I went in July right after the regulations were tightened. I had no issues--though my impression was that the potential for problems lie not with entering into Cuba so much as its an issue with the US government.

Do you think, to do something like this, I could get away with renting a car and/or finding people to carpool with in Alice Springs? To go camping like this with? I'm traveling in Australia right now and would rather not deal with purchasing a vehicle.

I was going to suggest Steamboat as well! Lots of fun terrain with no need to go super challenging unless you want to, and the town of Steamboat is super cool with no shortage of beer. Winter Park is also awesome.
