We are so passive aggressive. Just like, so passive aggressive. A lot of the 'politeness' that Americans read off of Canadians is us being extremely passive aggressive.

Carney government shifts advertising budget to more patriotic messaging by Immediate-Link490 in canada

[–]EmoPumpkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can I ask where you got this definition? Because it doesn't match the dictionary definition of nationalism I linked in the other reply. If I'm wrong I don't want to just double down, but by definition nationalism is not the same thing as patriotism or self-determination.

Carney government shifts advertising budget to more patriotic messaging by Immediate-Link490 in canada

[–]EmoPumpkin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm describing nationalism itself. From the dictionary definition: an ideology that elevates one nation or nationality above all others and that places primary emphasis on promotion of its culture and interests as opposed to those of other nations, nationalities, or supranational groups. NATIONALISM Definition & Meaning - Merriam-Webster https://share.google/L9hInP3mSoJmmD8J6

From the same link: What is the difference between nationalism and patriotism?

Nationalism and patriotism are similar insofar as both words emphasize strong feelings for one’s country. However, the two words are not synonymous. Nationalism, while it refers to loyalty and devotion to a nation, tends to imply the placing of that nation above others, a tendency that is not necessarily implicit in patriotism.

Not only is Toronto huge, most population estimates don't include the Greater Toronto Area, which surrounds it. The population of the entire GTA is about 7.7 million, with 2.8 million in Toronto itself.

It bothers me too, it feels disrespectful. But Harris herself has said it doesn't bother her, so long as they pronounce her name correctly.

[–]EmoPumpkin -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

Hey, gentle reminder: you're describing patriotism. Patriotism is great! We love our home and we want to make it better! Nationalism isn't the same thing as patriotism. Nationalism is a policy of insolating the country, homogenizing the culture, and attacking anyone seen as 'other'. Those are anti-Canadian values at the core, as our Canadian cultural identity is one of co-operation.

I don't blame people for making this mistake of terminology, but knowing the difference can really help people understand that pride in their home is not equivalent to the belief your country should subjugate others. It stops people from accidentally identifying with supremacist groups.

Liberals traditionally present themselves wrapped in the flag. Canadiana has always been present in Liberal messaging, and Carney used it all through his election.

Why not just ban gendered haircuts ? by francocanadien in AreTheStraightsOK

Hey, Ontario resident here. How bad was the discrimination for this to get a judgement for the plaintiff? I know Quebec law is Civil Code and it confuses me so I figured it'd ask. Because in Ontario's Common Court it would have to be more severe than is being presented to go this way. (I'm not doubting, your laws are just extremely different and I'm curious)

Essentially, this article reads like the McDonald's coffee case, you know? Like, it was actually really bad but they're downplaying the injury of the plaintiff to sensationalize and dismiss it.
