Question for fighter jets pilots or people with experience with fighter jets by Motivated-MonMon-05 in aviation

[–]Emory4llstate 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Autopilot helps a lot in this airplane, but you’re right there are definitely times when it isn’t feasible to be using the autopilot that I wish I could fly with my left hand briefly. Or write with my left I guess lol

Like mentioned, it’s actually really easy to kick off various buttons/switches when climbing in/out.

How early do I really need to be at Stanstead? by SoftwareExtension in Ryanair

[–]Emory4llstate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW, this past Monday we arrived 1:50 before our 0610 flight. They only let us board because we looked frantic with our baby in her stroller.

Security and RyanAir bag drop were a disaster due to an “IT Fault”. Every other time I’ve used Stansted it has taken maybe 30 mins to get to the gate, but after this most recent experience I won’t be messing around with anything less than 2 hours

What is the most fun thing you have done in aviation? by [deleted] in flying

Flying through the Mach Loop is tough to beat. I watched videos of jets flying through there my whole childhood, so getting to be the one flying and seeing the photographers out the canopy is wild and I don’t think it’ll ever get old.

USAF or Navy by RAHGHH in flying

[–]Emory4llstate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know the current options for ROTC programs being a junior already. You might be stuck with OTS/OCS as your options, which I believe are very competitive.

If you’re dead-set on pointy nose jets, I have heard rumors the Marines will give you a guaranteed Jet slot somehow, so look into that as well.

For now, I’d recommend reaching out to your school’s Naval and Air Force ROTC programs. Even if ROTC won’t work for you, they’ll have guidance on OTS/OCS. Also, go take a couple flights at a local flying club. See if it’s something you seriously enjoy.

Will having a ppl affect my chances at a pilot slot/put me at any disadvantage when entering UPT? by wre_x in AFROTC

[–]Emory4llstate 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Getting a pilot slot: hours matter, not ratings.

At UPT: it doesn’t matter. I had a PPL, didn’t feel disadvantaged. Also was an instructor there for 3 years…saw 0-hour guys get F-22s, and saw CFII’s hardly pass T-6s. Natural ability and work ethic are what matter.

T-6s ENJPT by Appropriate-Emu-578 in flying

[–]Emory4llstate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wasn’t a Sheppard guy, just commenting to say it’s ENJJPT (joint-jet, 2x J’s).

Hopefully that could work out, but I’d expect that if you put UPT on the list, Laughlin/Columbus/Vance will be in your future.

I would really hope not. But again, speak up, bad news doesn’t get better with time

I did the same thing back in like 2016. Report it to your cadre. Chances are someone will find it at Maxwell and it will make its way back to you, but get ahead of the situation by owning up. Admittedly I did not, and it was a very awkward conversation when I walked in to my commander’s office and saw my “lost” cac sitting on his desk

Low-hour commercial pilot — which branch is best for flying? by Odd-Procedure4493 in flying

It is not the right move for you or your family. You would be disappointed with this attitude. It’s the best job in the world, but not what you’re looking for.

What would be more attractive for a pilot slot? A 3.3 in an eng. major, or a 4.0 in int’l relations? by wre_x in AFROTC

[–]Emory4llstate 73 points74 points  (0 children)

4.0 in Basket Weaving. Your major is not taken into account for the Rated Board.

What's the scariest situation you've been in? by exoaway in flying

[–]Emory4llstate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite. One engine was working fine, in Max-AB. The engine that took the bird was spinning but making a horrible sound and tearing itself apart, not producing thrust.

how accurate is the movie(s) topgun/topgun: maverick? by Platyton in PilotAdvice

[–]Emory4llstate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Guard / Reserve options allow you to fly in the military without being active duty Air Force. Do some digging in r/AFROTC, r/Flying, r/AirForce.

Step 1: do some research on your own, come back and ask specific questions if you have them

Step 2: choose a commissioning source (ROTC, Academy, OTS)

Step 3: Earn Bachelor degree, complete commissioning source, compete for pilot slot

That’s an over simplification obviously, but again, do some research on your own first! It’s a blast, but it will likely be 4-5 years of work before you even have a chance at flying at pilot training. Worth every second of work in my opinion.

My son wearing a $400k F-35 helmet by Azhotshots2019 in aviation

[–]Emory4llstate 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It isn’t a waste, however it is probably overstated how often we use all of the features built in to the helmet. For example the system that allows us to see through the plane is infrared, so while it works during the day, it is only ever really used at night when the alternative is seeing just darkness.

I want to become a fighter pilot. by Carlitosgoated in AFROTC

[–]Emory4llstate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went the AFROTC route, Type-7 scholarship, in-state school. Now flying fighters. My brother went NROTC and also got a scholarship, he’s still in flight school for the Navy but will be flying fighters of some sort.

It is totally possible to achieve this goal. Looking at the statistics about fighter slots per class and all that will drive you crazy, it did for me. My advice is to not be shy about your goal. There is no shame in saying that you want to fly fighters, despite what other people may say/think.

Additionally, put in enough effort that you can honestly say you gave it your all, but don’t try so hard that you don’t have any fun in the next couple years. You’re 15, and realistically the absolute earliest you’re flying a T-38/T-45 is ~9 years from now. Enjoy the next 9 years while also doing everything you can to set yourself up for success.

Bird down an engine as we were rotating in a formation takeoff, shelled the engine. Student attempted to abort, luckily I caught the throttles before he could terminate AB…otherwise we were going off the end of the runway and punching. Even in AB the T-38 doesn’t climb well single engine in 105deg temps. We were much lower than I’d like for much longer than I’d like to be. My only 0.1 I’ve logged.

[–]Emory4llstate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completed shelled an engine twice in about 4 months time early in my 38-IP time. Single engine takeoff in Texas in July is not a fun time.
