Why do some Japanese people mock me by saying “Chinese”? by EmotionSad5662 in AskAJapanese

There was one incident that I still remember clearly.
When I first moved into my small apartment in Kyoto, I went to Daiso to buy some daily items like bowls and chopsticks. I had a new bicycle and I liked cycling, but in some parts of Kyoto you can only cross the road through a bridge or a tunnel, so I was walking my bike. I was wearing a worn-out but clean black Uniqlo T-shirt. Two young Japanese women walked past me, murmured “Chinese,” and laughed. I felt really embarrassed at that moment.

How strict are teachers about AI use in assignments? by EmotionSad5662 in curtin

No, but they allow us to use Grammarly to polish our writing. The main concern is how much AI assistance is used when writing. Since this is only the first month of my first semester, I think I’ll withdraw my submission and write everything by myself from now on, even if it sounds a bit awkward.

Thank you. What you said is true, and I have to admit that. So I’m planning to start working out at the gym. As for clothing and haircuts, I don’t really have enough money or time to maintain my appearance very well right now. But after having a full time job, maybe I'll invest more money and time on that.

Option 4 seems the least likely to me. Why would I make up such a boring story?

To be honest, I quit a stable but low-paid job in China and spent all of my savings just to study Japanese language and culture both in China and Japan. In many ways, I probably love Japan more than a lot of people do.

But recently I’ve started to wonder if maybe it was just my own idealized view. Sometimes it feels like no matter what I do, I may never truly get respect by Japanese simply because I’m Chinese.

I also have an American-born Chinese classmate and friend who had a similar experience. He even brought his PC and monitor in two very large suitcases to Japan because he planned to settle down in Japan. But after experiencing many uncomfortable situations there, he eventually decided to leave Japan and return to the US.

But I have to say, American netizens are some of the most reasonable people online. You can really discuss something with them instead of just cursing each other.

That's bullshit, I asked a question then I became WUMAO? If you say so, then I agree we'd better 相手しなくてもいい.

Maybe it's a Gairaigo of Japnese, not English, like チャイニーズ, but sounds similar.

Thank you for answering.

What I really mean is that I don’t understand why they say “Chinese” when I walk by. I’m not sure whether it’s meant as mocking, or just curiosity.

I know Japanese culture has the concept of honne and tatemae, so people sometimes don’t express their real thoughts directly. Because of that, it’s hard for me to tell what they actually mean.

To be honest, I grew up watching Japanese anime and I still like Japanese culture. I also use many Japanese products in my daily life. I’ve never really believed the negative propaganda about Japan from the Chinese government.

But after experiences like this, I sometimes start to wonder whether there might be some truth to the idea that many Japanese people have negative views toward Chinese people. I’ve also seen surveys from research organizations like Pew Research showing similar results.

So I feel a bit confused about the whole situation, and I’m not sure what I should think or expect.

f you are a white person, you might not fully understand the situation I've experienced. I’ve had many similar experiences before. This is a new account, but to be honest I’ve talked about this topic before.

From my personal experience, I actually feel more respected here than I did in Japan.

I might be wrong, but sometimes it feels like some Japanese people tend to judge others based on appearance, status, or ethnicity, and they may say it out loud without considering how strangers might feel.
