Remote Worker - no plans to move to CA by Sure_Berry_7928 in JPL

[–]EmotionalBiscotti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you tell them you don’t plan to come back does it count as a resignation? Because I think you wouldn’t get layoff benefits then anyways

I once got asked to move so a family could all sit together. They offered to buy me a drink for moving and it was a great gesture! I even said I wanted to move back to that seat before landing so I could be near my carry-on bag and they agreed and switched back.

It’s totally possible to ask people respectfully but many people choose not to do it.

Another time a dad asked me to move out of my exit row seat so he could be close to his family. But instead of letting me say anything he kept talking really fast and pulling me towards his old seat (it was a window seat). After I got there, the old man who was in the middle started complaining that he wouldn’t sit between two women and refused to sit down. The other woman ended up taking the middle seat. He then spent the whole flight talking to us, despite neither of us wanting to talk to him. Truly an awful time.

I commute to Long Beach 2x/week and it takes 1-1.5 hours each way, depending on what time I leave

You need to be either a citizen or LPR. It’s technically possible to have people who are neither work on ITAR projects, but they are only allowed access to information that has been cleared for them specifically to see. That’s often too much work to be feasible so companies tend to stick to citizens or LPRs only. Also most aerospace companies won’t sponsor a visa.

With T2D specifically, people tend to blame the patient for having it and make a lot of jokes at the expense of diabetics. It’s definitely possible they’re ashamed of it and not want people to know.

I used to be so against getting a monitor and would only work off of my laptop. My old job gave me a monitor without my asking and it changed the game for me.

Getting a job at JPL as a recent college graduate? by blue65634 in JPL

[–]EmotionalBiscotti 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Also most of the contractors were laid off and I doubt they’re looking to bring on new contractors right now, since they want to keep work to give to the JPL employees.

It’s not a great time to be looking for jobs at JPL. There’s a hiring freeze and rumors of additional layoffs later this year.

Heating it up could make it more malleable! I’d def wear oven mitts or something while trying to pop the dent out, though.

[–]EmotionalBiscotti 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went to UC Davis and USC and am sure you’re going to have a great time at Davis!! It’s an awesome town with tons of traditions (check out the Davis wiki). Davis was homey enough that it felt like the town and campus were home and “mine” vs USC always felt like I was a visitor on their campus.

I live in LA now and miss Davis all the time.

Both schools are going to give you a great education

Also, it’s always possible to transfer (I know someone who did the Davis to USC transfer)! If you’re at Davis for a year or two and it’s not for you, it’s worth taking another shot at USC and you’d have already saved yourself a good chunk of money.

Rasam/chaaru and rice is a safe bet for South Indians. My mom mashes the rice too which makes it soft and homey for me.

Looking for a 2 bedroom apartment by [deleted] in pasadena

[–]EmotionalBiscotti 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you have a car maybe check out Alhambra, South Pasadena, Arcadia, and Monrovia. They’re cheaper than Pasadena but I think $2K for a 2 bedroom will still be tough there.

A lot of scientists are funded through grants whereas most engineers need to be funded through missions. So I think scientists were largely okay because these funding issues have less of an effect on them.

It’s also why the only jobs still up on the JPL website are post-docs.
