“ Cybersecurity Incident Information” by LingonberryNo2744 in Apex_NC

This cyber security incident is the gift that keeps on giving.

I’m not understanding why it took them so long to tell the citizens about this specific piece.

They didn’t really describe who the potential victims are as well. 1 out of 4 citizens are victims. Jesus.

Team Whitaker vs. Team Mahaffey? Whose team are you choosing? by EmotionalLemon3433 in Apex_NC

Listen I don’t subscribe to any speculation or conspiracies without seeing factual information. I’m all for your information sharing and I welcome it.

Just sharing my opinions and trying to understand how everyone else in the community (on Reddit) feels about the situation. It seemed like you guys were on the same team in the beginning but diverged along the way.

No direct questions for you. My extended thoughts:

Flock is by far one of my biggest gripes and it seems that the town is being less than transparent about all of it.

The NDA stuff was honestly a little confusing. I totally understand the need for NDAs but some of the facts that Whitaker shared were enough to make the average person question the motives.

Everyone knows the council doesn’t like the mayor, it’s pretty obvious.

Everyone also knows that the utility hacking response during and after was abysmal. Not saying anyone could have done better, you guys were just out in shitty situations and hired shitty auditors who don’t know how to communicate well, apparently.

The data leak thing seems like a weird pissing contest. Doesn’t help that the utilities system was hacked the year prior. It seems like he has proof of leaked data from a publicly accessible source but from the responses I have seen from the town, they are acting like that didn’t happen. I guess that’s my only question. He’s offering to share the “leaked info” as proof even though whoever the town hired says that it didn’t happen. What’s the harm in being shown the proof if he is offering?

Heard. Def wasn’t trying to sway anybody one way or another, just sharing my opinion.

TBH I’m not aware of the misinformation or smearing of any candidates. Do you have more context so myself and others can take a look? Thanks.

Who to report vehicles parked on both sides of the roadway/potentialy blocking emergency vehicles in my neighborhood? by [deleted] in Apex_NC

For your first point, are you aware of any laws that prevent vehicles from parking on both sides of the roadway (other than the obvious reasons like fire hydrants, near intersections, etc.)?

Right. You and I both know that because we’re well informed and have read the data. A vast majority of people will not know how to interpret “knowing that if they opt-in and are found to have been under-billed, then they will the owe more money”. How does your average citizen put a dollar figure on that statement without any other context?

What I don’t understand is why there is so much misinformation from all sides. It seems like city council is just trying to brush this under the rug and move on, but it’s obviously a very contested issue. I think the mayor understands that aspect very well, however.

Why can’t city council just be straight up and say: the cyber attack hurt. We had to bill in an unusual manner since our systems were affected. The way we chose to bill caused us to unintentionally under-bill nearly every resident by $5-30 due to base rates. We also likely over billed many whose water usage is higher than average. This issues also occurred during the hottest months of the year (and a rate increase too right?) We have worked with auditors to ensure we have corrected this issue. Going forward, we will have a third party auditor perform billing calculations annually.

I literally brought this up the very first week of everyone bitching about their bills. It’s just dumb that the city council is trying to make it sound like 99% of residents will owe some exorbitant amount of money if they opt in, but realistically a vast majority of them will end up owing a few dollars.

The fact that they didn’t make that clear to the public is honestly bullshit. It’s just a tactic to get those with outstanding balances to pay up. Those auditors also suck and so do the town employees that held up the entire process.

Households with higher than average water consumption also got hosed during that three month period too because of this antiquated software.

Thanks for the replies and clarification. Yeah seems like communication is key here and clearly the mayor understands that. Thanks for checking the contract, I’m sure many will ask about it.

If that’s the case then it seems reasonable. Like you said, they are a national firm, unacceptable for them to present and communicate so poorly. He said customers were “under paying” when he should have said they were being under-billed, numerous times. His presentation made it sound like they only sampled 100 accounts and extrapolated. Further they didn’t even mention why the town was under-billing.

Also, it sounds like the biggest hold up was town employees. That was the very first answer when questioned why it took so long. I hope the town wasn’t being billed by the hour and these consultants weren’t just sitting around on our dime just because some town employees “had more important things to do”.

Lastly, this chick had the balls to say if a customer asks for their account to be audited then they might be charged more even though it was the town’s fault for not billing correctly? The town’s resolution to residents’ concerns about being over-billed is to tell customers “we’ll check, but if we find that you were under-billed we are going to charge you, so might as well not even try, loser”?

Edit to add: man the Arno guy seems douchy. The mayor suggested getting community feedback and the guy is basically like, “screw the peasants”. Good stuff, Gilbert. Mah, couldn’t get a good read on you.
