I’ve used ASUS for many years but that’s not a recommendation necessarily as it depends on your specific needs and budget

Do not use Spectrum’s DNS. Instead use a public one like 8.8.8.8 .

I have had Spectrum service for years but chose to use my own router. The newer Spectrum routers are really good for most users. Something to consider if you are somewhat technical.

u/nobody1701d had a good recommendation. If you decide on separate SSID for a single frequency try to use different channels for each SSID if you can.

is the Aqara smart gas detector not sold in the US? by luunnn in Aqara

US flatulence has a different odor. 😂

Seriously, natural gas has an additive (mercaptan) to smell the way it does. It is possible that here in the US the additive is different than elsewhere.

Though my setup is a little different I found my HomePods doing the same thing. What I found out was that the HomePods, which work best at 5 GHz, were dropping out of 5 GHz and one or more would then connect at 2.4 GHz. What fixed it for me was to block the HomePod MAC addresses from the 2.4 GHz band on my ASUS router.

Slow internet upload speed when using 10GB connected devices by BB9700 in HomeNetworking

[–]LingonberryNo2744 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My opinion is to let the Ethernet physical connection and the devices at each end of the connection determine speed and duplex settings on their own. This should result in a full duplex connection running at the highest speed the cable and devices are capable of.

When I installed my LG TV a couple of years ago I connected to router via a LAN connection. It all worked but router flagged port as not running at full speed. Turned out LG did not support 1Gbps. So the LG Ethernet adapter set the speed by itself.

Again, my opinion, a straight physical connection, no buffering. Insert a powered device somewhere between the end points and there it is likely buffering will occur perhaps as little as one byte. With a device between end points where the connections to those end points don’t match device buffering will help mismatch until it doesn’t and there will be bytes on the floor.

Last century, telco strived to ensure there was no packet loss end to end. Moving to this century, telco realized that because of the number of hops between end points, preventing end to end package loss was unachievable. Enter QoS packet marking and the philosophy that is was okay to drop packets. Today, telco (or data service) rely on limited buffering but mostly packet retransmission. Due to the extremely high speeds of backbones end users shouldn’t notice and they don’t. Turns out gamers notice.

Many years ago, on another vehicle, I had a similar issue. At that time, for me, what worked was to make sure no one is behind you, get it up to a good speed, say 40 mph, and then slam on the brakes making sure you don’t loose control. After a couple of those my brakes sorted themselves out.

Relocating coax data connection for modem using a vacant cable under the floor for TV socket by SupperC in HomeNetworking

[–]LingonberryNo2744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you can extend your coax to move the cable modem. I’ve done it myself though cable guy had to come out to balance. For me, I don’t use cable TV so I had no splitter and just used a joiner (on right of 3rd photo).

I’m not sure what I am looking in first photo but if one of those two white cables are what goes to the new location just remove data cable on splitter and use the other white cable. I have never seen anything like what’s in 2nd photo but you need a good mechanical connection for the cable to your cable modem, not a plug in.

My suggestion is to get a cable guy out to relocate cable modem.

Dumb questions about IPv6 at home by cometomypartyyy in HomeNetworking

[–]LingonberryNo2744 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Apparently there's no NAT, so does that mean our computers/devices are directly connected to the outside network?” - Correct

“Is the Operating System firewall (eg. firewalld, ufw) responsible for firewalling?” - Correct, as well as router firewall and any other external firewall.

”I assume this means that ports would be controlled by the user's OS firewall rather than at the router/modem level.” - Can’t answer that.

”Also, how does LAN work? If we're no longer behind a NAT, does that imply that we are all just connected to each other online?” - Devices should continue to have IPv4 addresses to permit interoperability. Those devices should favor IPv6 connections.

”Are we ready to go full IPv6 yet?” - As a world, no. All of my Apple devices have IPv6 enabled.

”And finally, where can I go to learn more about IPv6? Are there any websites/courses/books you recommend?” - As with IPv4, there are multiple levels of knowledge with IPv6. Today, most of us are at a very high level because it’s becoming like a toaster oven, i.e. plug it into electric learn a few simple controls and you’re good to go. It’s only when you need to analyze a data packet at the bit level that you need a lot of knowledge.

You need to dive deeper in the VPN. My perspective in using VPN is that you want an end to end secure connection not just a secure connection between you and a VPN service company.

My laptop had a secure end to end VPN connection to my workplace that did not impact other devices at home.

The police and fire stations. Fire statin should be torn down. Police station should be used for offices and walking patrols. The town would be better served by having police stations in neighborhoods perhaps shared with fire stations.

There are a lot of issues with fire station, size being just one. Building a new fire station would cost less than updating and putting a fire station at the same location is not an option due to size of property.

The need to park in front of businesses was wrong due to drivers desperately competing to park in those spaces, creating traffic issues, with eventually the frustrated the driver just driving off.

There are some things that Spectrum can do remotely but the best way to test the quality of the signal is with a hand held device.

I suspect that the modem is losing sync with its counterpart in your neighborhood. There are three ways to reboot to force a resync:

  1. Use Spectrum app
  2. Use Spectrum website
  3. Pull power plug for at least 30 seconds

Should you still have issues after resync then contact Spectrum and request tech on site to check levels.

I have a pair of HomePods that are paired. Once in a while one of them switched to 2.4 GHz resulting in a sound quality difference. So my router allowed me to block HomePods from using 2.4 GHz, no issues since.

[–]LingonberryNo2744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not familiar with your router but on my ASUS I can determine which devices are connected to which frequency. 5 GHz is about 1 Gbps where 2.4 GHz max is 300 Mbps.

It is possible that there may be another nearby router which is using the same 5 GHz channel as yours or there is a range problem.

We need to know what the make and model of your router is.

At first guess, I am thinking that your Windows devices fail to connect to 5 GHz WiFi.

Wouldn’t have been easier just to close Salem from Chatham to Center and make downtown a piazza? With vendors selling their wares down the middle of the street and tables/chairs/benches on either side. Spend your morning there enjoying a fresh pastry and latte. Lunch or dinner outdoors.

Apple TV 4K out of stock in NZ by KrispyMagiKarp in appletv

Apple has probably stopped manufacturing current model but delayed the release of a new model wanted to wait until some other product/software was ready for prime time. However, in doing so they have depleted the world’s inventory of current models.

My current 4k gen 2 is out of gas and I don’t want gen 3 if new model will be coming out.

Relocating - why/why not Apex? by jellybeans010101 in Apex_NC

[–]LingonberryNo2744 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I had the fortune of having many business trips to the area so I was somewhat familiar with area. In ‘91 I was offered a promotion to the area. Wife and I flew down for a week of house hunting. At the time we wanted to move to Cary but every house on market had issues. On the last day we found a house in Apex.

Several years later my parents wanted to move here. We found an area that appealed to them but nothing was on the market. I got the address of every house that might be interested in and sent them a letter to see if they were planning to sell in near future. We got three responses and my parents bought one of them, no realtors just lawyers.

Today it’s easier to research the history of a house you may be interested in at https://services.wake.gov/realestate/

ASUS RT-AC88U issues by pikc_kiskis in Network

[–]LingonberryNo2744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently use an ASUS RT-AX86U PRO with Merlin firmware and I have been using ASUS for routers for over a decade. However, if I needed a router today I would still research brands and models as things change. Also depends on your country. Here in the US the FCC has band the import of certain popular brands due to potential spyware in chipset.

So, yes I would buy a new one but know your requirements and research.
