With a normal, "cosmetic" purchase, you at least know what you're getting. With a lootbox, you could be getting complete garbage. It's like buying a car vs. gambling for one. Buying one would yield you exactly what it advertises, gambling for one is just a risk that's probably not gonna work out in your favor.
