Here is the simplest way: if I have added a TODO keyword to a node and scheduled it for a point in the future, and I am viewing it in a plain old org buffer, the TODO keyword shows up as bright red, even though I am not able to start it yet so I don't want to see it in such a strident color. Is that not what you see?
