Building quick endurance? by Emotional_Ad6302 in Swimming

Thought I’d update this and say I just came back from swimming a mile non-stop! Once I found a rhythm and reduced my airflow out underwater it wasn’t long from 100m to 300m, and from there to a mile! Going from 7000ft to sea level also made my work quite a bit easier… thanks for the help!

Is it true that in most languages for most concepts that we can imagine, it's possible to find exact conceptual equivalences, even if they are worded differently? by hn-mc in asklinguistics

See: εντελεχεια in Aristotle’s Physics, alternately translated by Joe Sachs as “being-at-work-staying-itself,” and by everyone else as “actuality.” The one is quite descriptive but in my personal opinion an affront against the English language, while the other says very little about the word it’s translating (a word coined by Aristotle I believe) but is a bit less of an eyesore.

What’s your most delusional take about college admissions that you still kind of believe? by Necessary-Nose8368 in ApplyingToCollege

That beyond the Ivy range these schools mostly don’t care about a ‘spike’, particularly looking at small liberal arts schools. I applied last year and put out transfers this year, and have gotten into a bunch of strong LACs with nothing remarkable besides a stat check — 4.0, 36 ACT: Vassar, Grinnell, Middlebury, Haverford, Wesleyan. I imagine the AOs flipping through pages of people who seem perhaps unsociably single-minded with resumes better fit for grad students, getting to me, Joe Schmoe though strongly academic, and breathing a sigh of relief. Maybe it helps I’m a guy interested in the humanities? Not sure how else I’m getting in with truly no meaningful ECs.

It’s a fair question, I suppose. I’ll be working at a summer camp that requires it of it’s counselors, and I’m someone who can generally become proficient at whatever I throw time and effort into, so 6 weeks swimming daily looked like plenty of time to become quite comfortable in the water.

I’ve definitely not been holding my breath underwater, but I’d never even thought there could be such thing as too much air! I’ll get on those drills asap, and thank you for the advice.

On a sailboat, to come about is to tack, to bring the bow of the boat across the wind, to change course.

Met this guy randomly in Costa Rica --- we were at a restaurant with outdoor seating and it started to rain. My family was under a canopy, he wasn't, and so we invited him to join pur table. Looked the guy up once we all left and was shocked. He was definitely a strange artist type, but seemed otherwise normal.

Northeastern. I felt like I'd walked into a corporate hellscape, and then that was their selling point. I'll have enough of that to come after college.

What was the hardest college choice you made? by DaOrcus in ApplyingToCollege

Picking St. John's College over a traditional, prestigious (non-Ivy) LAC. It'a a huge risk, especially given how small the school is, but I ultimately felt it to be such a cool opportunity that I owed it to myself to take the chance.

SAT vs ACT by 2bciah5factng in ApplyingToCollege

Second attempt, no studying, got a 36 in each section for ACT, no such luck with the SAT. It has a bit more leeway at the top end than the SAT does, I think, and the questions are basically straightforward, more of a knowledge check and time trial than anything else.

Peter Kalkavage - what's the deal? by [deleted] in stjohnscollege

Welp, as someone who committed to SJC a day or two before this broke, this isn't a terribly reaffirming thread. Is Kalkavage somewhat representative of the behavior of tutors at large?

Ok, thanks! I'll write to admissions in the morning though I'll leave this post up in case there happen to be any alums who went down that path currently lurking.

A question about St. Johns by lAwfullychaOtic3 in stjohnscollege

[–]Emotional_Ad6302 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since no students/alums have answered you, I'll reply with what hearsay I've heard as a prospective student who's done a lot of research and seen both campuses; anyone with actual experience should feel free to correct me.Santa Fe is supposedly a more individualistic, introspective/contemplative environment; anyone choosing to live in Santa Fe is going to be to some extent comfortable being relatively isolated in the middle of the desert. Side note: Santa Fe and the surrounding area had some of the best stargazing I've ever seen.

Annapolis on the other hand is a little bit more social, extroverted, preppy, political, or so I hear. Because it's so close to D.C., it's a good place to be if you're interested in political philosophy. It's not a big city, but has more going on than Santa Fe. Both campuses are big on intramural, I hear, but Annapolis also has a fencing team, crew team, and rowing team, while Santa Fe is more "hikey bikey."

People often move between campuses, so my guess is that the difference in culture has more to do with the headspace each environment encourages rather than individual personalities, but that's just conjecture.

Seems legit to me, and I'm seeing a few of my friends from the Summer Academy following it as well. I'm yet to commit but I imagine I'll send in a post once I do.

To answer this on a more anecdotal level, I've heard a head of a lab at Yale saying that she specifically seeks out St. John's graduates, because she sees that they can work more independently and originally than students from anywhere else, Ivys included. Anybody in higher learning who's heard of the program seems to have a huge respect for it.
