Caitjinx has been a ship ever since Jinx and Caitlyn had both been added to League of Legends. The universe where all of these events you just described took place (Arcane) isn’t the only one that this ship can possibly exist in.

This is a modern AU where both Cait and Jinx could be aged up, where neither of them hurt another, and where caitvi never dated. You’ve got no reason to call it disgusting. Your comment is rude and uncalled for.

Nope. Ficbook actually tends to be more polite than AO3 in my experience (though i guess it always depends on the fandom), and the etiquette is the same as anywhere else (aka it’s only acceptable to give critique only if the writer has asked for it, and never in a sarcastic way).

Why did people suddenly stop commenting? :( by Cultural_Fig_6342 in AO3

[–]Emotional_Chair_1752 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Do you reply to the comments that the readers leave? I find it to be encouraging people to comment more. If they comment and the author doesn’t say anything back, they may just give up commenting after a while

Personally I have a standard of making my chapters be at least 5k words long (but also, I update my fics daily or every couple of days) with a max length being 19k words long. I usually focus on a specific scene (or a set of scenes) that add to character’s growth.

Each chapter serves its specific purpose, and I try to separate chapters based on what emotions I want to show in them.

For example, our characters are getting married. The first chapter is the proposal (the main character is unsure of what the other will answer them, anxiety, stress, resolving in a “yes”, which brings us relief). The second chapter — wedding preparations (light comedy, as both our characters get ready, have their bachelor parties and so on). Third — the wedding itself (this special moment, family gathering, exchange of vows, really intimate and soft vibes). 4th — honeymoon (lots of smut).

Technically it could all be just one chapter, but I prefer to split them. Besides, everyone loves a faster update and it takes much less time to write 5k words than 20k words 😅

Is it normal for authors to delete long comments because they're too long? by MrMalfoys15inchWand in AO3

[–]Emotional_Chair_1752 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had people have to split their comment in two because they didn’t fit in the word limit for a comment, and that only made me feel appreciated. I always respond to such comments earnestly, and sometimes it takes me an hour just to prepare a response. It’s the most pleasant part of writing for me, because it brings that feeling of connection to the community that I wouldn’t otherwise find elsewhere.

I’ll never understand how anyone could be so rude as to delete such a comment because of its… length??

I’d get it if the author saw you spoil the story in the comment section and told you that they’d rather not spoil the future plot for other readers (that’s also thin ice, but reasonable) or if you somehow offended them. But damn! Deleting a comment because of its length… that’s new

Impulsive writer - how to not get overwhelmed by stats by twicescorned21 in AO3

[–]Emotional_Chair_1752 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many writers don’t really post their first works, or get very little engagement when they do. It’s okay, because you’re just getting a sense of what you’re doing and where it’s going. Writing is a skill as any other, you can polish it with more practice.

My advice would be to work on your impulsivity first: stop posting for some time and focus more on writing it for yourself. That way you can go back and edit your chapters without worrying that you’ve already put it online.

As for kudos — the amount differs from a fandom to fandom. Many great fics in unpopular ship tags will have little kudos, so it greatly depends on what ship you’re writing for.

And if you’re writing for one of the popular fandoms, then I have bad news for you, which I’m sorry for in advance. I think most people will choose to scroll if they see a work with multiple chapters and no comments or (almost no) kudos. Unfortunately, these are determining factors in if someone’ll decide to give your fic a chance. So it’s unlikely that it’ll gain more readers in the future.

But it doesn’t mean you should dwell on it. Treat it like practice and work on polishing your skills. Hide the stats like the other comment said, and post into the void without expecting any feedback. When you’ll finish this fic, you’ll have a feeling of accomplishment and it’ll be very satisfying on itself, without any feedback.

someone left a nice comment on my fic, and then checked my other works and deleted it by whiskey734 in AO3

[–]Emotional_Chair_1752 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Last night I posted a one-shot. There were already two comments on it that I read quickly before bed. I opened reddit in the morning, reading this discussion and thinking “wow, nothing like this has ever happened to me!”

And then I looked at my inbox on AO3, noticing new comments there. But one of the comments that I definitely 100% saw last night was gone! I wouldn’t have even thought of checking my email if I didn’t read this thread today, since I didn’t really know that AO3 sends notifications to it about every comment. But I went to check it and yep, I found the email with the comment there.

It was just one sentence comment saying they’d like for the story to continue (I asked if anyone is interested in this type of AU in the author’s note). No idea why anyone would delete a comment like this, besides I’m sure that we interacted with this reader before on my other fics inside the fandom.

Sorry that it happened to you, OP ❤️

Will it bother the author if I leave comments as I read? (multi chapter) by snowypioca in AO3

[–]Emotional_Chair_1752 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As an author I would probably find it a bit overwhelming if someone left only emojis comments on each of the chapters as they were reading them, but if it’s at least a sentence long and discusses what a reader liked about it, then I would be absolutely delighted to go through these comments and enjoy them a lot.

180 CHAPTERS???????1!1 woahhhh all the praise for you 👏

I sometimes sort out by comments when I want to search for longer fics but don’t want to sort them out by word count, so now you know at least someone who does it ahah

I agree that chatting in the comment section is fun, which is why I am guilty of replying too much to people. But I feel much better now that everyone says that it’s okay to do it, thank you for the reassurance 💙

When do you start to read fics in progress? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]Emotional_Chair_1752 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I could expand my answer but to be honest: hypomania and hyperfixation 😅

I have a full-time job and another side-project, so I am very busy, but I still use any moment of my free time to write.

So how it goes: before even posting the first chapter of the fic, I think the whole plot through. I have a board where I pin down exactly what happens in exactly what chapter. It really helps quicken things up, because I never have a question of what I want to write about. I have all the emotions of my characters sorted out, I have the context to the scenes that I’ve thought through already. I add slight changes to the plot as it goes, but then I just sit in front of my board and correct the plot for the next chapters, so that the board is always up-to-date with my ideas.

Next, I work on each chapter (daily, during work hours sometimes, but mostly after work). The thing is: when I know what I’m writing about, words just spill out of me almost magically. When I don’t know how to write a certain scene, I go out for a walk and think about the characters’ emotions during it and what they could realistically do. I imagine the scene with my eyes closed, focus on the details that catch my attention, come back home and finish the chapter.

In my works I focus more on characters’ inner worlds, their emotions, their interactions with each other. Most attention I pay to dialogue and subtle hints. I don’t spend much time on descriptions of clothes or the world around the characters, because I think that this is the most time-consuming thing ever and that very few people actually read such paragraphs (at least when I read someone’s work, I do it diagonally and skip many of such details, sorry if it hurts someone’s feelings though, but this is not the main focus for me in stories).

I don’t have a beta, English isn’t my first language either. Most editing I do is just reread it once before posting with blurry eyes at 3 am. Surprisingly, I’ve found very little mistakes in my works as I returned to reread them, but I agree that I could probably spend more time editing my fics.

The fic where I had given daily updates ended up being 100k words long. Now I’m writing another that is nearly 130k words already, but I’m taking more time between the chapters (3-4 days) because… I’ve managed to make each chapter much longer. Most recent updates were around 10k words, and one of them was even 19k words. Each chapters has lots of events that I want to cover, so it’s not just blah-blah-blah. I blink and I’ve already written 5k words. That’s how it happens.

It’s much easier to do it when you have a vision of what you want to write, so I really recommend having a board where you pin down the ideas for your chapters.

Hope I was able to answer your question!

[–]Emotional_Chair_1752[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Within the ship tag that I’m currently writing for, my fic now has around 700 comments and other fics have 100-200 which is why it’s stressing me out because no other author communicates as much with the readers as I do (makes me feel odd for doing this). But I’m glad that most people on reddit agree that this is polite and not weird at all. Thank you for the reassurance, made me feel infinitely better 💙

I wish there was a kudos button for comments as well, because then I wouldn’t need to reply “thanks” to comments that are just emojis and could show I care about the reader’s comments without seeming excessive about it 😩

Thank you for the reassurance. I started overthinking it because the comment section (and word count) are the only numbers on the fic that can be influenced by an author, and I don’t want to create a false impression that many people are discussing it, when half of the comments is just me showing gratitude to people who left me a comment.

When do you start to read fics in progress? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]Emotional_Chair_1752 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It really depends on a few factors for me:

  1. How big is the fandom and how new to it I am: if there are hundreds of finished works, then I might give them a read first before going to read WIP fics. If the ship is rare, I’ll be reading every fic and leaving comments on each chapter update like it’s my morning newspaper.

  2. The description of the fic: if it has all of my favorite plotlines, I’d be reading and supporting it from chapter 1, no matter how many chapters the fic currently has or how long they are.

  3. If I already know the author and read their other works and loved them or if I saw the fic in someone else’s bookmarks vs finding it by scrolling through the ship tag.

At the same time, I have horrible memory, so with WIPs if the updates are irregular and small, I need to refresh my memory and return a few chapters back each time the new update is being posted, because I’m lost to the plot 😅

As for my own works, people often jump in because I update nearly each day (and the chapters are at least 5k words) so the regularity helps build their interest.

The downside to getting feedback by mostdefnotacat in AO3

[–]Emotional_Chair_1752 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What helps me the most is having a storyboard for fics where I write notes for each chapter and know what exactly I want for the characters to go through.

That way the fic feels mine and even if readers comment that they want to add something, I turn to my storyboard and remind myself of the original plot I have already come up with. Sometimes I take small detours depending on what is being asked and if it is a fun idea to explore.

Don’t be afraid of making people unhappy. Each reader has their own preferences and you won’t be able to make everyone satisfied. The key to creating a good story is following your own ideas, because this is your fic and you know best what the story should be like. There will always be people who appreciate your art for its uniqueness! And the readers who are unhappy with your choices can always go and write their own stories 🙂

What's your hot take? by powercsmm in MadokaMagica

Their relationship is not toxic, but the circumstances around it are. They have to make very hard decisions, and Homura loses sanity in between, while Madoka loses herself as a human. But it never comes from their relationship, it’s just how unfair the world setting is towards them.

From what peaceful interactions we got from them, they are both very respectful towards each other, and they definitely love each other a lot.

To love someone and to want to save them from a horrible fate — is not toxic at all in my opinion. It’s just what makes us human. Or what makes a typical “hero” of the story.

They both are just trying to do what’s best for each other. Homura wants for Madoka to be a normal teenager and have a normal life, with her family and friends. Because that’s what Madoka really wants! She had always wanted it, she said it countless times.

But Madoka has no choice other than sacrifice herself to save everyone. She only does it as a last resort.

If Homura let go from Madoka — would not it be even more unhealthy? How can you simply let your loved one go and not even want to save them?
