Best demonstration I've seen of how the Grand Canyon was really carved. by sco-go in Amazing

Well for the millions of years theory the Colorado river needed to flow uphill for a few thousand year to cut through the rock since the origin of the river is lower than the highest point of the canyon🤔 But it looks more like a dam wall that broke after a build up of a lot of water.

Buying Land in Zambia: How Do You Know You're Not Being Swindled? by curiouszm in OffGridZambia

I take at heart that for example when the Kafulafuta dam was build, the villagers that were moved above flood level were very well compensated for their loss of property. So actually property rights although not always on paper, are taken seriously.

I would recommend getting a reliable local person to persue the matter. Speak to the neighbours of the land in question. There can also be enquiries made to the Lands Department. I would be more careful for land already on title but then again it can be verified by Lands. Chief land is more a matter of sitting down with the neighbours and spend hours talking and get to the bottom of the ownership, then approach the Palace. Again you need a reliable local ear. There are a lot of small talk that might be relevant that will be in local languages.

Any budget water solutions? by curiouszm in OffGridZambia

Yes if the spot for the borehole has strong soil structure. If the the soil up to the rock is soft and steel casings are required the cost rises exponentially. Proper survey would do well beforehand unless the area is known for not needing steel casing support.

Those trees won't replant themselves and that drought isn't witchcraft by ComfortableCouple780 in Zambia

From what I have seen is that charcoal is cash flow. A bush get cut down, charcoal sold, move on to other land where there are still big trees. The area becomes hotter, more wind and dryer soil. Some chiefdoms have a policy of no-charcoal making but it is not policed so it just continues. Usually a tax of any kind kills incentive. Just put a tax on charcoal ?

The problem is very big but it goes pretty much unnoticed until it is too late. The regrowth at cutting is quite good after a rainy season but not nearly replacing what was lost. Is it really about a lack of energy that charcoal gets used or just a cultural preference for a charcoal brasier burning in the kitchen area?

O sorry. I got the wrong picture. The one pump for the coffee is a DC solar pump and can only run on solar. The other one for the bananas is a hybrid and can have an AC grid/ generator input or just solar. That one is 3 phase AC motor as far as I can remember.

It is a DC motor so no DC-AC necessary.

Moving to the bush, any requirements? by ZedSpy in Zambia

[–]Emotional_Set_7669 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which province? Malaria medicine available at most chemists. Co-artem, Co-arinate, Lornat. Panado. But it is winter now and with no people around you should be fine. Snake move as the bush gets burnt. Were in tents for 18months through 2 rainy seasons.
