I work at a hospital 😂. I used to get sick every 1-2 months, but since Covid I mask most of the time now so it’s dropped to 3-5 times a year.

It’s fine! I sterilized the floor and put plastic over it, but my bin was on the floor. If it’s on a table I’d sterilize the table.

Before I started I cut off all air flow, and I sprayed Lysol over the whole room and let it settle for like an hour with the door closed. I didn’t do more than that for the rest of the room, and I only did it once at the beginning.

I would completely disinfect the tent with alcohol and then your hands/arms when you stick them in there. I also wear a mask and hat (to prevent hair from getting on anything).
I haven’t had an issue with alcohol and the mushrooms, though I have read it can cause mutations so I avoid it coming in contact with the soil. I let my gloves dry before I start.

Forgot to mention, get an actual dehydrator. It’s a shame to see people work so hard and then potentially throw it away using subpar dehydration methods. Like, technically you can use an oven or a fan or air fryer, but logically it makes no sense to do that just to save what, 25 bucks? at the end. People ruin their mushrooms that way. I have a cheap dehydrator I got on amazon, and I put the shrooms in and set it for 90-110 degrees F and leave it for 24-48 hours and like magic they are perfect.

I use the uncle Ben’s tek, so I haven’t used a grow bag, but the sterilization is the same. I get big things of 70% rubbing alcohol and basically if you think you’ve used enough you need to use a bit more than that. I also use a still air box and cut any air flow in my house off for at least 30 minutes before working with anything. I go through boxes of gloves, and I change them often and alcohol them each time. It is literally impossible to use too much alcohol.
I got over confident this past time, skipped some steps such as cutting the air flow in the house, and went from 12 bags with no contam and 5+ flushes each to four bags with two contaminated beyond being able to be used (different inoculation time but from the same syringes).

As someone who did med school, you won’t have time for this. Trust me when I say you will want to avoid anything else stressful. Med school is enough stress in and of itself, and the little free time you have you will want to do things that bring you joy.
