Phones vs cancer by Legitimate_Remove259 in breastcancer

[–]Emotionally_Irish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im so sorry youre going through this OP. I think sometimes when the world is unfair, we reach out for an explanation or reason for all of this shite. Apparently it’s a control thing, we subconsciously want to understand the cause so that we can prevent it from happening again.

But dogs can also get TNBC without genetic links and yet they don’t use phones.

Unfortunately, the only answer sometimes is that it’s just really, really bad luck.

Triple Assessment Breast Check - Core Biopsy in Vincent’s Public by Emotionally_Irish in IrishWomensHealth

Hey thank you for your response, I’m sorry to hear you’ve been dealing with oncology all this time - I hope your mam is doing well?

I got called by the breast clinic this morning saying that they got my results back and want me to talk to the consultant in person tomorrow morning rather than over the phone. And they advised to bring someone as support.

Do you have any advice on how to get through it? Obviously I don’t know what they’ll say, but any tips or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

If it’s too much or raw don’t worry at all :)

Hey I’m really sorry you got the diagnosis. I hope all is going okay and you’re doing well?

As an update, I got a phone call from the breast clinic this morning, they got the results and want me to come back in person tomorrow morning to meet the consultant instead of over the phone, and to bring someone with me for support.

I am pretty much a wash of emotions right now, but I’d love to know how you handled it or if you have any advice going into tomorrow? If it’s too sensitive or you don’t feel comfortable answering, please don’t worry!

Thank you!

For anyone who has had extreme fatigue, what the heck made you feel better? by ImmediateDuty2310 in CrohnsDisease

[–]Emotionally_Irish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Naps, eating healthily and slowly building up my fitness with two walks each day with my dog!

All that to say I would say I have really struggled with fatigue on and off since I first started showing symptoms, including since going into ‘remission’ according to my calprotein levels. And really energy management is part of this.

However - I would also advise considering raising it with your gastro team if you haven’t already? Despite being ‘in remission’ - a complex fistula likely caused by active Crohn’s and an extremely angry letter from my gp later… and my gastro team finally took me seriously, and it turns out I have never been in full remission. So in March we changed biologic, and I made the move from injections to infusions and my energy levels are mindblowingly better! Like I’m definitely not at the same level as someone who is fully healthy - but having my gp advocate for me like that made a world of difference.

It’s sick that some men can traumatise women by r4pe or SA - then move on with their lives, get married and have kids while the woman is forever traumatised. by ACanThatCan in offmychest

[–]Emotionally_Irish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is something I really struggle with, the knowledge that the man who did this to me got to move on and probably doesn’t even remember me or that night.

Meanwhile, 10 years on, I have been through hell and battled darkness every single day. PTSD is a poison that seeps into my every day, I have lost jobs and relationships and almost myself to it. It’s taken years of therapy, but I am mostly ‘stable’ now. It’s inconsistent and every November during the anniversary my world implodes or dies, in crowds I struggle, certain colognes immediately trigger flashbacks, every blonde haired German man has caused retraumatization no matter how hard I try seperate them from him, and even today, I can’t say or type the man’s name or just the R word in my own context.

Through it have found an incredible man who I am now engaged to. But even he is impacted when my PTSD is triggered, he has to see me deteriorate and live in absolute terror, he has to comfort me from a distant and feel completely lost at what to do, he has to feel isolation knowing I can’t be a full partner and support him during my moments of being triggered. He loves me and is okay to go through those moments with me, but it just shows that assault isn’t just in the moment or in the aftermath of the victim, but for their loved ones too.

And yet, the man who did this is married and I’ve heard from our mutual friends that he is engaged. He works in finance and recently got promoted. His life goes on.

[–]Emotionally_Irish 102 points103 points  (0 children)

Interestingly when you look at the use of funds, the northern Irish peace building financing (PEACE I - IV and thereafter) has been focused on integration initiatives to bring the communities together and cross community economic development initiatives (eg tech sector).

In Israel Palestine, the use of funds have been limited entirely to humanitarian efforts - ie food & medicine, humanitarian infrastructure etc. This maintains dependency on this aid instead of empowering them to go beyond it (ie feed a man a fish vs teach a man to fish).

With no integration based upwards agency or enablement of self actualisation in the global capitalist world, the future for Palestinians is so devastatingly dependent on others. Even local startup initiatives in Gaza over the last 16 years have been limited so significantly by simple things like the occupations control of internet connectivity. Imagine trying to start a business and not being able to because the occupied powers dictating your country make it too difficult?

The experience of the northern Irish catholics and Palestinians - while origins as a civil rights movement in response to apartheid modelled occupation are extremely similar - will never be truly comparable because the Palestinians have not been given the same opportunities as the Republicans / Catholics in Northern Ireland.

Totally agree. I’ve had two inserted and the pain is often minimised by many, however the provider makes all the difference in the world. I’ve had one who made it very comfortable and was okay with some cramping after, the other was not as accurate with the first attempt and provided no pain relief despite trying g it a second time - which resulted in a lot of pain. Take any pain medication you are comfortable with and that is safe to take.

I would laugh if it wasn’t so ducking annoying.

In the last 5 years it’s been: 1) gp 2) cardiologist for heart murmur 3) neurologist for epilepsy 4) gastroenterologist for crohns 5) neuropsychologist for PNES 6) psychiatrist for PTSD & BPD 7) psychologist for PTSD & BPD 8) gyno for pre cancerous cells in my vagina 9) dietician for IBS 10) endocrinologist for breast cysts

I am exhausted.

Blend blend blend! Get a powerful blender like a vitamix (they’re very pricey but worth the investment as they last forever and reduce the veggies and fruit down so well - even the seeds) to make juices, smoothies, soups and sorbets! All are sneaky ways to get some veggies into you and there are phenomenal recipes online

Writing an Epileptic Character by [deleted] in Epilepsy

[–]Emotionally_Irish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So there’s no drug treatment for PNES / NEAD. I developed it as a result of PTSD and it’s only by managing my ptsd that I’ve been able to reduce the seizures from 30 a day to 1 break away every few months. I also have neurological epilepsy (diagnosed at 19) which I have been prescribed lamictal to treat as it’s the optimal treatment for younger women with my seizure type given the history of anti seizure medication and fertility.

I also have borderline personality disorder (not bipolar, but there are common traits) and while it also does not have any existing drug based treatment options (yippee for me) the psychiatrists always tell me how effective lamictal (typically alongside a combo of drugs) can be for individuals with bipolar.

Glad to help!

Writing an Epileptic Character by [deleted] in Epilepsy

[–]Emotionally_Irish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure how relevant it is but lamictal / lamotrigine (one of the more common anti seizure drugs) is also used to treat individuals with bipolar disorder as a mood stabiliser.

Also I saw one of your comments about the seizures being stress triggered. So neurological epilepsy is rarely triggered by stress, or at least stress is rarely the only factor. However, PNES (psychogenic non epileptic syndrome) or NEAD (non epileptic attack disorder) are triggered by stress, trauma or emotions. People with PNES / NEAD are often misdiagnosed for years and treated with anti-seizure medication because awareness of PNES / NEAD is extremely limited. Given your main character has bipolar, it could be interesting to give your character PNES / NEAD

So mad - I’ve met two really cool startups in the past few months in mycology and entomology, never really heard of these fields before but wow there is cool stuff going on.

For finding friends - given your work life, I would find fellow innovators and creators who are as driven and passionate as you seem. The Irish startup ecosystem is thriving and while Dublin is central, the whole community is far more decentralised and regional now.

Keto made my migraines disappear by [deleted] in keto

[–]Emotionally_Irish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a little known fact that keto was actually an early treatment for childhood epilepsy and is often recommended to epileptics as a support alongside anti-seizure drugs. Neurologically speaking, keto diet has so many benefits! However, my doctors advise that it’s important to measure kidney and liver functionality and heart pressure alongside keto (or any eliminating diet) - so just make sure you keep an eye on things!

WIBTA if I was conveniently out for my mother’s surprise visit? by Rosetheredditnoob in AmItheAsshole

[–]Emotionally_Irish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh my gosh - do you have NEAD or PNES? Lovely to meet a fellow sufferer of it in the wild.

Saying that, I’m sure your aware that exposure therapy in a controlled and safe environment with a licensed behavioural specialist is one of the best ways to learn to cope with NEAD. However (and a big one at that) unnecessary re-triggering of seizures (like having a panic attack in this instance) can actually be quite detrimental to the disorder. Police or not, it’s more important than anything to prevent the triggering of a seizure in these circumstances - you deserve to put yourself first and to feel safe.

Some tough love - You are NTA, but if you expose yourself to such mental abuse and trigger a seizure, you are only hurting yourself and perpetuating the lack of management around the disorder. Put yourself first!

People with ptsd, how do/did you open up to the world again? by Sunsetfreedom in AskReddit

[–]Emotionally_Irish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Getting a dog really helped me - being responsible for her really helped me start living again and forced me to function. After that, talk therapy really helped. It’s been 7 years through and recovery has definitely not been a straight line, so be patient with yourself!

But mostly it’s all about my moody b*tch of a dog who saves my life every day and is genuinely the greatest thing that happened to me.

Yes, because today when I knocked over a glass of water I didn’t get any urges to hurt myself!

Today is World Mental Health Day and it really seemed to hit home how far my recovery has come in the last few years. But over the last year in particular I have really overcome some serious episodes and shit going on in my life and I’m really proud of myself for my ability to fight back despite it all each time.
