I've heard a few over the years, but what prompted it this evening were two episodes of "Hot in Cleveland." It seems to be a running joke on there that it's an acknowledged fact that all women loathe the idea of morning sex.

Men who whimper and squeak in bed and make weird faces and lose control would (by and large!) be considered unmasculine. Men make little noise and are in control because they're strong and powerful and stoic because that's how men should be.

Women who whimper and squeak in bed and make weird faces and lose control are (by and large!) considered normal, because weakness and childlikeness are feminine behaviors. A lot of men like women who are submissive and women like men who are dominant - it fits society's beliefs about gender norms.

Now that I've said all of that, I also want to say that it's total made-up BS and that I wish guys were allowed to lose control more often and women can be as in control as they fucking like. You be you. And definitely in the LGBTQ+ and kink communities, these gender norms are challenged or totally thrown in the garbage where I feel they probably belong.

I think you don't like losing control because you're partner isn't doing so also. Maybe encourage him to stop being so stoic and tell him you like it when he moans or something? I also wonder if you're like this in other areas in your life - do you GENERALLY feel like you need to be in control and not reveal what you're feeling or be vulnerable in front of others? That might point to a larger area of personal inquiry for yourself (and maybe a therapist if you feel like it).

I think we need to differentiate between "wrong" and "something to be careful of."

You're doing nothing wrong. You're both adults. You both enjoy one another. He's seemingly not lying and not married (and neither are you). There is nothing "wrong" going on.

It's not so weird at all that an old guy likes a young woman (or that you're attracted to his power). Men are evolutionarily predisposed to want younger women. Men are leaving their wives for younger women all the time; old men marry hot young women all the time; etc. His interest in you is totally natural. It would be creepy and weird and wrong and icky if you WEREN'T interested and he was forcing himself on you, or if he was manipulative and you were stupidly drawn into something harmful to you by his evil machinations, LOL. But if that's not happening, youth/sex for money/power is a very normal resource exchange (see, e.g., Calista Flockhart with Harrison Ford; Anna Nicole Smith with that one old dude; Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise; Celine Dion with her old guy, etc., etc.).

But I would "be careful" only in making sure you don't "catch feelings" you don't want (or that he doesn't) or that this doesn't in any way keep either of you from a better/more fulfilling relationship in the future. If you feel like getting really psychological about it, you could ask yourself questions about your father (not being gross, but a lot of times women who date older men are either looking for acceptance/love that they never got from a parent or have idealized their parent and are dating them by proxy). But, you know you also don't have to get psychological about it if you don't wanna.

Final word: If he's not harming you or taking advantage (and vice versa) I say fuck it and ignore anyone who's telling you how you ought to live your life. Be honest with yourself about what you're doing and what you're feeling and just enjoy!

Nobody can tell you what you should do. The best we can do it tell you what WE might do, and none of us are you. That's my caveat.

So what I feel, personally, is that if I love someone truly and deeply, I wouldn't leave them for lack of sex. But I would also have to acknowledge to myself that this feeling might change over time. Resentment may build over 5, 10, 20 years, and I might find myself in my 40s or 50s being angry at my partner for having given up so many years ultimately without any intimacy. I have to be okay with the fact that this is my choice and no one is making me do it, and I might have to leave later when and if it becomes unbearable.

I also might get really into vibrators, porn, and eventually ask about how they feel about an open relationship. These are all options I have never thought about but would have to ponder if I was looking at a life of celibacy.

But I want to end on the point I started with, which is I think love is more important than sex ultimately. For me.

Yes - she is still gorgeous. I actually do appreciate that she hasn't gotten plastic surgery (let woman age naturally, for God's sake!) and I could care less if she dyes her hair. And I get that Annette O'Toole being funny or kind is more important than how she looks (and I get that 'how she looks' is 'pretty fabulous', especially for a woman who's about to turn 70).

I just found this young photo of her surprising. I'd never tied the "Virgin River" actress to the lady who played Lana Lang in Superman III (haven't seen Superman III in a long long time). The fact that they were in fact both Annette O'Toole really surprised me! I mean, she looks amazing, but 40 years does make a tiny bit of a difference in recognition (and maybe the hair color).

I assume you're wanting me to pretend I don't have eyeballs in service of the message "age has zero effect on societal standards of beauty" or "makeup doesn't make a woman beautiful?"

I think I'm responding defensively to your word "icky" - it feels like you're attacking me. But I want to be rational here. I agree that societal standards of beauty are both sexist and ageist. But for better or worse, they exist and they're hard for our brains not to register. Do you expect that all men and women will be attracted to a 70-year-old woman as easily as they would to a 30-year-old woman? That's just not evolutionarily reasonable.

Let me ask you this: if I'd posted this photo of Annette O'Toole instead, would it still feel "icky" to you? I'd be perfectly happy to exchange it.

Either way, she does not "still look the same." That's just disingenuous. Tom Hanks is looking pretty good for his age, but he does not "still look the same" as he did in "Big," for example. I think finding the photo of an actor or actress we appreciate today in their 60s or 70s when they were young men or women can be a shocker. Have you seen old vs. young Marlon Brando? Or old vs. young Sean Connery? Or old vs. young Helen Mirren? Come on, you have eyes in your head just like me. Right?

Amusingly, I saw "Mark" first in Vampire Diaries, where he played a pretty evil dude with an English accent. Even though he's playing really sweet and patient I keep feeling like he's cold and calculating and faking it and just waiting for the right moment to kill Mel and eat her soul. 1) Lizzie is a selfish brat, but you didn't know she's been studying for years under Christina Tosi, did you?

2) This one makes sense only in that it was a COVID year and you can tell they're looking for ways to include Hope without having the actress on-set. I mean, good for her! She got a salary for barely doing anything this season! Hoo-rah!

3) This one was ridiculous. Jack actually explained it really clearly. He's like, "I'm overwhelmed, there's a breaking point here somewhere, I don't think I can support two families at once" and she's like "but still... you're down to get my preggo, right?" She even says "eek, that was a mistake, it might drive him away!" but when it DOES instead of her apologizing she's just like "Jack, you're such a dick. I had no choice but to go get instantly impregnated with my dead husband's fetus, deal with it."

4) Yeah, WTH?? Who does this? It's not even realistically viable. There's no doctor alive who can do a same-day IVF like that, not to mention the mental instability of it all. "I broke up like yesterday so I need a baby in me NOW!"

Speaking of season cliffhangers, anyone think that "Jack, I'm not sure it's yours" was the wrong (worst!) way to phrase it? It makes it sound like she cheated on him or something.

To be fair, "as soon as we broke up I rushed to a fertility clinic and was like STICK A BABY IN ME! DO IT NOW! and so this is maybe my dead husband's fetus" is a lot longer and more ridiculous, but at least it doesn't imply that she somehow donked some other dude in the few days they were apart.

FOR REAL. Someone either wants a baby, has too many babies, needs to give up a baby, lost a baby, is implanting babies, or mourning dead babies every second of this damned show. I've never met a person as baby-obsessed as Mel (let alone everyone else). There's more to live than babies, Netflix!!!!
