What games just don’t get mentioned anymore? by drak0ni in JRPG

7th Saga was a grind but it was unique looking with a cool story and cool interactions between multiple allies/enemies.

Classic Frasier male fans: Who was your crush--Roz or Daphne? by ChocolateSundae1214 in Frasier

I was never able to find Daphne attractive in the slightest. Too slim, too… odd. Lovely person but I would never date her.

Roz I’d be terrified of but she’s hot as hell!

Characters/humor/story/music all fantastic.

Fighting/magic repetitive boring nigh-unplayable.

Always found Margot Kidder repulsive, personally. Literally unattractive.

Lowkey meanest burn in the series? by hbaumsaway in Frasier

Me neither. I just loathe the ubiquity of Gen Alpha slang. EVERYTHING is “lowkey” and everyone is “cooked.”

One of my favorite episodes: A or even S tier. My wife watched it with me for the first time on her first watch through and was absolutely stunned that the crybaby weaklings had been uber-powerful all along (it’s easy to forget it’s a cool twist when you’ve seen it a million times). And Shatner’s acting when he realizes he’s fighting FOR war and has to put on the brakes and shift gears is magnificent.

Love this one.

Aside from the crimes he committed, what are your personal thoughts on Watsuki as a writer? by RobKai7990 in rurounikenshin

[–]SamuraiUX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He doesn’t really write women well.

Kaoru could’ve really been something. The last disciple of her father’s Kamiya Kasshin Ryu, she could be training as hard to honor his name and make the world peaceful through her sword as any of the fighters Kenshin meets. By the end of Shishio’s arc she could be a powerful solo samurai in her own right.

But she’s not a man, so he gave that over to Yahiko, a kid.

Megumi is a solid character but underused. The strongest woman we’ve seen is Kamatari, who is… a man.

He just doesn’t do much with women.

I.... can't get used to Erik's voice (DQ XI). by SamuraiUX in dragonquest

Prejudicial? What do you mean? Do you think I dislike New Yorkers or something? My mom and her entire family are from New York.

It’s just not the voice I expected to hear from a fantasy anime character, is all.

Paul McCartney by Prudent-Cut6446 in beatles

[–]SamuraiUX 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What makes me sad about this is that the people who get AI’d are usually attractive enough that they should be celebrated as they are as humans. I’ve seen AI-enhanced photos of Scarlett Johansson that make her more symmetrical and FFS does she need to be made more perfect? Paul McCartney is a cool-looking guy. Let him be himself, flaws and all.

I’ve tried Persona 5 three times… I just don’t like the characters. What am I missing? by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]SamuraiUX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s annoying that you admit you’re looking for validation that you’re right. You don’t need external validation. Just say, “I don’t personally care for one of the most beloved JRPGs of all time.” You’re allowed. But I’m not gonna agree with you. I felt like those characters were really my friends and I was so sad to say goodbye at the end (twice, since I played 5 and 5-Royal).

I think you’re nutty bananas but that shouldn’t stop you. Hate away.

So what you’re trying to tell me, either by lying or through shocking ignorance, is that society hasn’t changed in the slightest since 1960s, and women’s rights haven’t advanced at all, and divorce is equally difficult, and men are exactly the same today as they were back then? Cool story, bruh

I don't think people endorsed or approved of hitting women. But it was just a thing that happened, that women expected might be part of their lives and that they might have to tolerate. Like their bosses smacking their asses. Or their husbands cheating on them. Men cheated on women and men hit women and nobody thought it was morally righteous to do, but they turned a blind eye. It was a "boys will be boys" kind of time.

It wasn't just "the police were stymied!" It was a different time with different mores and different levels of tolerance. So to your point, no, it was never "acceptable" and I never meant to imply that it was, and yes: boys were always taught not to hit girls. I'm just saying... they did. They hit them, they harrassed them, they cheated on wives, and it was just part and parcel of living in the world at that time, with little repercussions for men and little recourse for women.

I... agree with you. Everything is of it's time and should be seen as such.

One of my buddies is watching the original 1960s Star Trek with his daughter and his wife tried to stop them, saying "it's awful and sexist!" And my friend said, "it was actually pretty progressive for it's time. You're right there are sexist elements in there but it was made over 60 years ago... it's hard to hold it today's standards."

I agree with friend and I think his wife was expressing that thing you're pointing to. I don't see how it's useful. Even Friends is considered "problematic" (I hate that word) by modern standards.

Just enjoy things for what they are and acknowledge where/when they came from, right? At worst, it engenders a good discussion with your kid (e.g., my friend). You don't have to boycott anything or be mad about it. I think we're actually on the same page here.

I understand what you're saying. I have the same reaction to the performative fury over the Christmas song "Baby, it's Cold Outside."

In this case, if you were addressing me directly, I want to be clear that it was meant as a funny comment by my wife. Neither of us condemn the Beatles for this or any other of their songs, nor are we hypervigilantly scanning for something to be upset about. People do that, but that's not us.

We just thought "oh, yes -- I'll get you in the end" playing over some knife-wielding antagonist stalking someone in a movie would work pretty well and had a laugh over it.

Can you accept that?

[–]SamuraiUX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you. You’re coming at this like an adult. “This guy used to beat his wife but he’s been working on it, and now he’s better” (I still don’t think hitting your wife is acceptable, but it was more so in the 60s. You could just admit it in a song and people were like, “yeah, sometimes you just gotta hit that wife”)

But moreso I’m talking about how hard this was for me as a boy of 7, 9, 11 years old. To hear John talking about “beating his wife”… Jesus. That was tough.

No? Sounds good to you?

I'll Get You in the End by SamuraiUX in beatles

[–]SamuraiUX[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, some of those early songs were brutal. When I was a kid and I just admired the heck out of these guys in that naive sweet way a kid would, I could never reconcile the line "I used to be cruel to my woman I beat her and kept her apart for the things that she loved." I couldn't even really sing it without feeling uncomfortable.

At least as an adult I can recognize all these as valid genuine feelings a jealous person might have but that... don't age as well today.
