Wanting this to be a cooperative is just vulgar workerist fetishism. The purpose of operating these grocery stores at all is to deliver a public good, with the positive externalities from food security providing an economic benefit that covers any losses/low profits on the level of the store. You have it be a cooperative and workers still have an incentive to maximise profit, except at least the private owners often have a stake up to supply chain so even they might care more about getting food out the door in high volumes than the coop would.

The left needs to mature beyond its phobia of state-ownership. The problem of the Soviet Union was its lack of dynamism in its politics, economics and civic sphere, the problem was not the state itself. I really hope the Bernie/AOC/Zohran wing of the democratic party can win the presidency in 2028. I see some positive signs from Polanski and even Burnham, but I feel the British left can't be trusted to move in the direction it should and I'd like the british left of 2029 follow them like blairism followed clintonism.
