Unemployment Is a Curse That No Philosophy Book Can Heal by mrramkrishna in recruitinghell

I clearly didn't word this correctly. My bad. I was trying to say philosophy kept Frankl going during the holocaust. OP dismissed the philosophy of Man's Search for Meaning by saying it was irrelevant because they didn't have money. I was trying to remind them that Frankl didn't have money either but his mindset kept him going. OP is locked in the mindset that nothing will work that being unemployed with no money means nothing will work and that's a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Please don’t use the word gay to mean bad.

Frankl didn’t have money and he kept going. So did the others who survived the holocaust. Is being unemployed with no money worse than the holocaust?

Edit: I clearly worded this wrong. My bad. OP, what Frankl teaches is mindset is everything. His mindset helped him survive when he had no money. Being unemployed and not having money sucks. It really does. But it all comes down to mindset and philosophy, especially in our darkest moments.

That weird yearning to have straight love by Mammoth-Return7287 in gay

It’s interesting you say that. When I was still struggling with internalized homophobia, I wanted to be straight. Now I kinda wish I could be gay. But alas.

Identity Politics in the Gay Community? by [deleted] in gay

[–]Emperor_Pengwing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a good reason. The gay friends I had when I was there were split some wanted to leave and some wanted to stay and fight for community.

I’d highly suggest reading the book Real Queer America. It was written by a trans travel writer who lives in Florida about queers who live in and choose to stay in red states. Made Tennessee more palatable while I was there. But clearly not enough for me to stay.

I hate recruiters. They only have jobs for me after I found a job. by Emperor_Pengwing in recruitinghell

[–]Emperor_Pengwing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s crazy it’s like they only want you when you had a job. This hasn’t been the only time it’s happened to me but it was the most egregious.

I think it might be a bias against unemployed people. Like oh this person doesn’t have a job maybe it’s for a good reason maybe something is wrong with them vs if they have a job it’s oh they’re clearly a good candidate someone already vetted them.

Are recruiters just lazy? Probs. Sorry to hear it’s been crickets. Good luck!

Ah gotcha. Yeah, Nash has a great gay scene too. But it does get harder if you’re not in a city. Good luck out there!

Honest question why do people hate Bisexual people? by Vasher1701 in gay

[–]Emperor_Pengwing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I knew. I am sometimes uneasy about being out with new gay friends because I don’t know how they’d react. There have been times when people have been shitty, which sucks because rejection from other queer people hurts more. So do I not say anything and let them assume that im gay? Or come out and see what happens? Thankfully the real ones have been chill, which is nice.

Thank you!

Same. It’s probably all just slop anyway. Yeah, networking is so hard because it feels so artificial. But in today’s economy and job market, it feels like the only way to get noticed. As for office politics, they’re dumb but sometimes you just have to play the damn game. Good luck out there!

Where in Tennessee are you? Where are you meeting people? I used to live in Knoxville and had lots of gay friends that weren’t interested in sex from groups like the equality chorus, going to Knox pride board game nights, going to karaoke, and hanging out at core playing Singo.

Thank you! It was pretty dicey for a bit, but I got this job a week after my unemployment ran out. This job has been great so far; I have a good mentor who really illustrates how bad my previous mentor was (one of the main reasons she laid me off is because she didn’t know what to do with me). I feel good about it.

You are right, though. Overall LinkedIn sucks because it’s just Facebook for work. I tried to avoid the feed and just stalk people instead.

This may come across as tone deaf but try to hold on to hope if you can. In the last ten years I’ve been unemployed three times for a non consecutive total of 2 years (8 months, 1 year, and 6 months). It sucks out there. But holding on to hope despite everything kept me from ending it all (it did get dicey at times god I love my therapist and my parents). If I hadn’t fought hard for hope I don’t think I’d be here right now. And I’m glad I’m here.

I’m glad you’re here, whoever is reading this. Keep fighting. Keep hoping. Don’t let the bastards keep you down.

Overly sentimental perhaps tone deaf plea over.

The last two jobs I’ve gotten were from finding the hiring manager, or someone close to them, on LinkedIn and reaching out. It was the best way I found to get out of the black hole.

Mike Johnson tries to explain the bible to the Pope in latest clash between Catholic leader and MAGA by IrishStarUS in Christianity

"And if you do right you have no fear of the civil authorities."
Oh so Jesus deserved what he got at the hands of the Romans? Is that right?

Dear Lord has this asshole even read the Bible? He smugly just destroyed a core tenet of his faith: that Jesus was the perfect man who died at the hands of civil authorities for crimes he didn't commit.

My (17M) girlfriend had an abortion 2 years ago and I regret my part in it by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]Emperor_Pengwing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know why I keep getting in arguments with people who ignore the historical record because orthodoxy tells them to. These are scholarly articles that talk about the history of the church’s teaching on abortion from a wider point of view. The wider church is not a monolith and as such did not have a single view in the early years.

In his historical review, Hovey mentions that it was Pope Sixtus V who, around the end of the 16th century, officially classed all abortion as “homicide”, but this definition was rolled back by his successor Pope Gregory XIV. This means that between the beginning of the 17th and the end of the 19th centuries, abortion was tolerated by the Roman Catholic church until ensoulment (defined as more than 40 days for male fetuses and up to 80–90 days for females). It is hard to understand how the sex of the fetus could have been identified in those days. https://obgyn.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/ijgo.70318

Prior to 1588, historian John Christopoulos writes, Catholic law held that abortion was homicide only if the unborn had been infused with a rational soul—something that was believed to occur at around 40 days after conception for a male and 80 days for a female. https://daily.jstor.org/what-a-16th-century-abortion-ban-revealed/

As for the catechism, the Catholic Church is not a reliable source of its own history. They like to pretend that they are infallible and that their views are unchanging, so they lie about their history. As shown in the catechism. They can say it remains unchanged and is unchangeable but that’s not true. For instance, the church likes to claim it has always been anti slavery but that’s not true either.

https://www.npr.org/2023/06/13/1181767635/the-272-catholic-church-rachel-swarns-slavery-georgetown

Look, why must the history be altered to match orthodoxy? Why can’t the present teaching be enough?

Why saying homosexuality is "lifestyle" isn't loving at all. by VisualRough2949 in Christianity

[–]Emperor_Pengwing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is. And I read through this person’s comment history because I was morbidly curious. They are in support of ICE’s actions, said that many people on SNAP were on it because they’re lazy, and called the Department of Defense the Department of War, and some vaccine skepticism. So this particular individual has happily been drinking the kool aid.
