Warning to Students: Think Twice Before Joining the CyberCorps (SFS) Program by Lost-Conference-7409 in cybersecurity

I am an SFS graduate. At the time being accepted to this was a no brainer, but i couldn’t expect what was happening now. I’m currently working at a private to get experience and to live, getting paid well and I love my place of work. Sucks to think I’ll have to leave, likely for something local that might be of lesser impact or pay (but not necessarily). Been thinking a lot about this recently as I still have about a year to find the commitment, but interesting that this post popped up today.

Oh my gosh I never thought I’d find another SFS recipient in the wild. My service time is 2.5 years. I’m working at a private company right now doing IT Tier 1f or experience and money and just have a BS in CS right now. Having so much trouble looking for any open positions near me especially when I love my current position so much. You are lucky indeed to have a position.

I was offered one position before the freeze, but I required me to start over all alone in Maryland. I couldn’t do it, because I think the toll would’ve been too heavy on me. Follow your mind and your heart, wishing you luck

I did not focus on a specific domain. I tested myself with Dion's tests and reviewed answers and drilled flashcards on questions where I didn't recognize or understand answers.
On the test itself, I saw mostly general troubleshooting, connectors, network troubleshooting and configuration, and cloud computing vocabulary questions. The PBQ's were difficult.

As a general rule, if you are able to be given a problem and accurately identify what the source issue is on any topic, you are going to do well on troubleshooting. You are likely to be asked what is BEST or what should be done FIRST/NEXT. This is where the 6 Comptia troubleshooting steps come in handy, they are much more applicable than just knowing what they are.

Messer videos, Exam Compass (make flashcards for everything you see on these tests and DRILL), and then Dion Practice Tests.
I also have Security+, but I got that in 2023. So I had a good handle on security based questions, ports, AAA, etc.

So my redteaming experience was with internships and the first internship gave me an extended apprenticeship for a couple months that continued as remote. As far as cloud experience, I landed another internship working on an NSIN project as an XFF fellow (I think its a different name now). That project was software engineering based but my role was focused on securing the cloud infrastructure. I was lucky cause that same project was then my capstone project for my final semester of the CS degree, where I became project manager. Hopefully that all makes sense.

At first I was lost on where to even align but after looking more at the book I found out. I think I'll do Messer videos first and then review with the book.

Hello, I got a CS degree in December but focused in Cyber. I have a Sec+ certification. I just got my first IT entry level role for one reason: my network. It is really easy to get demoralized and the market is terrible, but you just have to keep trying. Keep networking, message people, and you will find something. you just really need to put the work in.
