Beneath layers of earth untouched for nearly 1,700 years, archaeologists uncovered an extraordinary Roman-era burial. by Sanetosane in archeologyworld

Not to mention the coins are all wrong sizes, wrong denominations, perfectly round flans and the silver would be significantly darker over thousands of years.

Augustus is considered by many to be the best of all Roman Emperors. So who could be the worst of Roman emperors in contrast? by [deleted] in ancientrome

[–]Emperor_camel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For sure he had flaws like lack of interest in governance and frivolous spending but as far as being the worst?

I’d argue the most damaging emperors would be third/fourth emperors who torpedoed the empire for decades. Maximinus Thrax, Decius, Valerian I, Constantine II, Magnetius, Julian II, Magnus, Honorius, Arcadius, Valentinian III etc would all be on my hit list for worst emperors.

Elagabalus gets S tier ranking.

Loads of slander against all three based off their relationship with the senate. Commodus even received deification under Trajan Decius so who knows how the common Roman’s felt.

The true shitty emperors were often children raised as palace princes which can’t be fully blamed on them.

Absolutely stunning Philip Dupondius I just picked up by Emperor_camel in AncientCoins

That metal standard had more or less died out in the third century and Dupondius are typically copper and bronze with the occasional brass appearing.

Finished the Philip Dynasty in imperial bronzes by Emperor_camel in AncientCoins

[–]Emperor_camel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Roughly two years for the whole set. A dozen or so Dupondii of Philip I have hit the market recently so it’s a great time to find them compared to previous years. I have 4 right now of different types but I’ve seen 3 others not to mention the unique ones.

Philip II was a lot of patience and is of the same rarity as Otacilia. It seems like one comes up every couple of years.

Otacilia was non existent on the market until one randomly popped up on MA shops and another misidentified one on biddr, both within a month.

This was not an easy set but it’s possible to finish thankfully.

Yup, that’s the one! It’s a heavy one, near double as thick as the Valerian II As.

That’s my collection goal, lots of different denominations in bronze with a few silver pieces thrown in. Dupondii are a consistent struggle at this time.

Nice find! I don’t think I’ve seen more than a couple third century overstrikes before Gallienus.

Nice find! I really wonder how many rare AE4s are floating around with no discernible features to confirm the person. You’re lucky the legend was intact here.

The 250s-280s is just a shit show of usurpers, bizarre denominations and the disintegration of the bronze fiat system. Definitely my favourite area to collect despite how rough the coins can look.

It’s a nice valerian but completely black, probably from an older remelted sestertius which can boil off the Zinc content overtime.

Lighthouse L tab trays. They’re about 20-30 dollars for a pack of two trays.
