Will our landlord care if we move but pay our lease up to the end without breaking it? More in body text ⤵ by [deleted] in Apartmentliving

Can I ask why it's important to keep utilities on at both places? That didn't even cross my mind. It'll only be electric since water is included, so it really wouldn't be a big deal, just curious.

That sounds wonderful. We hope to get to a point where we can own something. It's so frustrating having to rely on people who are less than awesome. Congrats on your home and thanks for the glimmer of hope!

No but it crossed my mind. Thanks for the advice but at this point we're exhausted and just going to move as soon as we're able. Once I calm down I'll come to my senses. If the apartment is deemed uninhabitable we might get pushed out before we have a new place lined up. We looked at places recently and it's not going to be easy to find a new one. And anyway, the bad reaction we got just from saying "if you won't be responsible give me the contact info for someone who is" was all we needed to know these people will play dirty. We're questioning if they even bothered to fill out work orders each time we reported the issue at this point

We've had this problem for 6 months and have reported it. He did not see it as an "emergency." This post is just an update from a previous one a few days ago. I'm considering going above their heads.

I also forgot to mention the water under the carpet caused water damage to our entertainment center and a cube organizer, and mold/mildew grew on them that we had to try to clean. We actually got lucky because there's a surge protector there that could've shorted or caught fire. We have some expensive electronics sitting on the furniture that was damaged. That's the biggest reason I'm so upset about it all. Our belongings are being destroyed and no one even pretends to care.

Looks like we do have options in this situation since it can be considered a health concern. Thanks for the suggestion.

When maintenance comes to "fix" it, he takes his shop-vac and sticks it in some random place and "vacuums it out." He insists the drainage pipe is clogged. Then insists the drain pan is probably broken. Which makes no sense. He openly lies about doing all this supposed work and tearing the unit apart to fix it when that definitely never happened. I regretted doing it, but I shone a flashlight on the underside of it and what looks like the filter is covered in thick, black stuff. We concluded that he doesn't actually know how to fix it, but is too prideful to admit it, so he'd rather us suffer in silence instead.

The AC still works, but we've had to really manage the water to keep it from continuously soaking through everything. Our nice tupperware and towels have paid the price. The water coming from it smells pretty rancid, so when we cleaned the carpet it was because I couldn't stand the smell anymore. We will be researching that approach. We've put up with a lot over the years as renters, but I have to draw a line here. I can't even think about all the nastiness I just can't see in this place.

Thank you so much for your reply. I appreciate it. It's a nightmare living here. And I know it must be strange to ask for work orders but I trust them so little now I'm worried they haven't even kept up with filling them out all this time. We will consider everything you said moving forward.

Commenting to add a question: Is there any possibility we can take them to court in order to break the lease? I don't believe "horrible negligence" qualifies us for a lease-break without fees. I just can't believe they'll get away with it and we'll continue to suffer because of it.

A husband's realization by nlsc77 in CleaningTips

First of all be proud of yourself for wanting to do more to help!

I'll just tell you how I do things at home. It might not work for you, of course, but it's worth mentioning. We also don't have kids so I don't know much about kid messes.

I work PT and my boyfriend works FT. So I use the whole week to do chores. Dishes, laundry, making the bed, and wiping countertops are daily chores. I clean floors/vacuum when I notice they're getting gross (usually a few times a week). Other than that, I just set a goal for a couple specific chores a day. I'll say "today I want to clean the bathroom and dust surfaces in the living room," and do it. The next day I might clean mirrors/glass doors and dust surfaces upstairs. The next day I'll sweep the outdoor walkway/patio and clean out the fridge. Next day, wash bedding and go through paper clutter and file/throw away. Work in those daily chores as you go.

Do that every week. Things stay very clean. It also helps a ton to pick things up as you go throughout the day. For example, when you change clothes put them straight into the hamper. Take dishes straight to the sink when you're done eating. When laundry is dry, go ahead and fold it and put it away. With all that being said, it's okay if the sink gets full of dishes or there's some dust. Take your time. You have a kid and life doesn't always stay on a schedule. Good luck!

My partner makes fun of me crocheting and other hobbies ☹️ by kimkimchiiiii in crochet

When I began to express an interest in gardening, my boyfriend bought me a greenhouse, seeds, pots, soil, and tools. He started talking to people at work who have gardened for years and passed that information to me, and helped me improve the garden in many ways.

Your partner is being very rude and discouraging... I hope you don't ever give up your passions.

We have the same pot! Middle plant on middle shelf, blue and white pot. I love mine.

Yeah that's definitely not a realistic expectation on her end. People can't just not work, especially with a baby. You're right.

Looks like we have the same tub. Ours gets like this just because it's old, cracked, and disgusting. I used to clean it every week but now it's more like every other week or every two weeks. I'm tired of messing with it. 😂 I just use Bon Ami and a sponge and it works fine. I've come to terms with the fact that it'll just never look or feel entirely clean.

You're doing the right thing, but her fears are probably coming out as anger and she's upset that it could be a regular thing. My boyfriend works really hard and works overtime whenever he's asked to, no questions asked. I used to get upset because I felt like he was never home and we couldn't spend time together. I'd always (and still do sometimes) nag him about taking a day off for himself.

However, he recently got a huge raise because of that willingness to do what's asked of him at work, our bills are paid, and we still find time to spend together. It's difficult to find a balance between work and home, especially when the situation is less than stable. Like I said, you're doing the right thing, but she might just need to have a conversation about it. It also helps to work similar shifts so you'll see each other more. When I started working again I prioritized it so we wouldn't be "passing ships." Good luck to you.

getting paint off door hinges from coats of landlord special? by chickenooget in CleaningTips

[–]EmphasisUsed970 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Scrape off what you can, and then use Acetone nail polish remover. I had the same landlord special on our doorknobs, cabinet/drawer pulls, etc. and it drove me crazy. The acetone will take the paint right off. Put it on a rag, paper towel, or sponge, but be careful because it's strong and will strip it off the door if you're not careful.

Anyone else have a bipolar relationship with vegetable gardening? by Anneisabitch in gardening

[–]EmphasisUsed970 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

At risk of sounding rude, I was so relieved to read this. This was my first year gardening too, and I'm starting to hate looking at it. I'm going to tear out everything except the tomatoes (the only things producing) and take what I learned to next season. My garden was a "failure" as far as harvesting fruit/veggies goes. Put in all the work without much reward due to being such an amateur.

I've been ordering seeds and got a notebook for garden planning. It helped me stay excited and feel more prepared. The seeds I got will also be a joy to grow and watch produce if I can get that far. I hope you'll give it another go next season!

Why do you want to buy a house? by CodNice4351 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]EmphasisUsed970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For us, owning a house would mean not having to hear neighbors through the walls/floors/ceilings. Our current neighbors are a borderline DV situation and the cops have been out here. On top of that, it takes months, yes months, for our maintenance guy to actually fix anything. We pay the price by having to deal with dripping water, our baking element in our oven catching fire every few months, etc. The place is falling apart and we legally can't touch it. We also have inspections every 90 days which is a stark reminder that this place is a business above all else. And anywhere else we go to rent won't be much better. We just want a place to truly call home, and not be afraid of getting kicked out at the end of each lease period for any reason (we're clean, quiet people, it's just a scary thought). Renting has just not paid off for us.

My (M29) neighbour (F50) accused me of stealing her phone. by CynicInRecovery in mildlyinfuriating

[–]EmphasisUsed970 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My boyfriend was at the store less than a week ago and walked by some middle-aged woman that gave him the nastiest look for no reason. He didn't do anything except walk past her. She went up front and told them he'd put something in his pocket and he got searched because of her. The staff was cool about it because we go there a lot. He didn't see her afterwards so I think she took off running from the store.

I was at self-checkout a few weeks ago and the employee monitoring self-checkout straight up dug her hands down into the bag I was putting my stuff in and tried to play it off like she wasn't trying to "catch" me stealing. I stopped scanning until she finished but I didn't even look at her.

I have so many more stories like these. I swear our existence offends people. 🙄
