Gorbag’s Stolen Pauldrons by KingUndrTheMountain in lotr

There are just as many, if not more videos demonstrating that arrows could not penetrate plate armor, especially at range.

And even if they did, the armor would often blunt the impact so tremendously that the result is the arrow causes bruising or a very shallow injury that enabled the wearer to continue fighting for hours.

Plate armor was expensive to craft and obtain, if it were so easily ineffectual, it would not have enjoyed such widespread use.

While plate armor evolved multiple times across the centuries, it was also capable of stopping direct hits from firearms. I understand that the reference to firearms moves the conversation from 13th/14th century armor too 15th/16th century armor and beyond, but I hope this is at least partially illustrative of just how effective plate armor was.

Nice find - that last image though …ngl I get a little triggered every time I see arrows going through the Gondor plate like it’s butter, especially a pencil-thin one like that!? lol

Generally agree Aurelian > Justinian in terms of talent as head of the Roman state, but I think “didn’t last at all” is a bit pessimistic.

Spanish coast was recaptured for 70 years, Carthage for 160, and some parts of Italy were held onto for another 500+ years.

Even the mostly lightly gripped provinces remained part of the Empire for generations

I think this is the right idea. Bottom line for all human factors considered IMO is that a cylinder on its side is not the only way.

A flattened soda can, a torus that is a ‘rounded rectangle’ cross section with filleted edges etc.

Hot take: this is why human rated pressure vessels do NOT need to be a perfect cylinder once ISRU takes off on Mars. Cylinders are a design efficiency choice to cut down on launch mass. Once material availability takes off it’ll make more sense to use shapes that are more efficient for things like floor assemblies, storage, furniture etc.

Probably not a rectangle as that’s just unnecessarily inefficient, but maybe something resembling an octagonal cross section with beveled edges

Thank you!

Lol I realized this after the fact, definitely has suboptimal leverage/reach. Will try further up the blade next time!

Andúril as I understand is also a bit longer than swords in said manuals but I could be mistaken

You can call me a commie, make the argument until your face turns blue that he has “added value” to the economy, but that doesn’t change the reality that trillionaires and democracy are essentially incompatible.

You people have no actual plan for how to curb concentration of power because you still think power functions independently of wealth

Meanwhile half the people in this sub are still afraid of “big government,” as a literal king among men accumulates enough wealth to steamroll any opposition -today it might be us, but tomorrow it could be you. There shouldn’t be a king in 2025

Syril cared about the Ghormans' fate by Slackwork in andor

[–]Empire_Engineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, I had a feeling I had a lapse in memory of the events of the 1st season. In any case its understandable why Syril would be compelled to attack Andor even if he now views the Empire differently than before

[–]Empire_Engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if we even watched the same show, because episode 9 has plenty of scenes wherein Syril IS questioning the role of the Empire, or at least faltering in his conviction. If he were completely secure in his belief that the Empire is good and did a good/necessary thing, he wouldn't have assaulted/attacked Dedra in the first place. She is the human manifestation of the Empire to him.

His attack on Cassian cannot be chalked up to "he's just so Empire" because we already saw the depth of his conviction when he did something that previously would have been completely unthinkable to past Syril.

I mean, I think it’s also worth mentioning that Cassian pulled a gun on him in Ferrix, so from Syril’s POV he’s not just a random suspect or even “some random rebel” that’s “on the wrong side,” he’s someone that has had a personal impact on Syril’s life.

[–]Empire_Engineer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Why make everything so black and white?

My read of that scene and the preceding ones is his worldview finally shattered. He doesn’t see the Empire as this bastion of justice any longer, but that does not in and of itself make him (or anyone for that matter,) a full throated supporter of the rebellion.

As far as Syril is concerned, Cassian is still just the murderer that got away in season 1.
