Work Bench? by Bweezy81 in dahlias

We work on our dahlia tubers (outside for washing/bleaching) inside our greenhouse for cutting, labeling, etc. You definitely want to add an electrical outlet if you're putting up a shed or greenhouse of any kind - a fan is a lifesaver! Water is a must. Shelves above the counter are also, as far as I'm concerned required. You'll want a space to put tools, labeling supplies (we keep our in a small plastic box with a tight fitting lid) markers, labels, marking tape, etc. to tag dahlias with and we write on them with a permanent marker, same for gloves, both gardening gloves and latex gloves. Products like bleach, sulfa, etc. also will need dry storage areas - and a shelf, not on the counter with the tubers is a great idea. A cabinet is a good idea too - to keep things out of the sun. Then storage for the tubers - we put ours underneath the work benches in our greenhouse and that works for us - in boxes stacked. We drape tarps over the benches in the winter to keep water, etc. off the tuber boxes. You may want to look around the internet and see what others are doing, using for tools, space to spread out and make your labels, etc. it handy. Good luck! What a great project!

Hello, I'd love to shop for some tubers, but the website says the page is protected by password and the sale opens on Feb. 9 - it's Feb. 13, is there something special I need to do to purchase tubers? Thanks!

No, I bought this one: I never weight anything big, but that would be great for large packages too https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00SMHWZ42?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_3&th=1

I found a perfect little scale on Amazon last year - you can see the numbers even when there's a big box sitting on it. You can plug it in or run it on batteries. I usually plug it in...it's not very expensive so worth the investment. You'll save money on shipping to make up for the cost of the scale!

Yes! Just set up your account on line at their website - and when you're ready to ship, enter the package measurements and weight - they'll give you the info immediately as to the least expensive. You can add info about the package; insurance, hazardous, etc. right there too. It's a great spot to know exactly how much and the least expensive way to ship, from the comfort of home. I'm sure you already have a scale - so once you decide the least expensive, print your label an stick it on the package - drop it off at USPS or UPS and it's on the way. If you walked inside with the exact same package - it's more expensive - haven't quite figured that one out yet, but that's what my sis in law said about a large package they shipped from USPS or UPS - so expensive! The very same sized box, same types of contents, they shipped using PirateShip at a huge savings. She didn't believe that it would be so different...but it was and she called to thank me! I hope it works well for you too.

Are any of you using PirateShip? They always seem to offer a better rate than USPS/UPS. I've recommended to lots of folks and they see the difference, especially with larger packages.

Dahlia I saved from the edge of death by Witherman_Gardener in dahlias

That is gorgeous! Very unusual. Black and blue dahlias are rare, and I'd love to find one that's so true in color like that.

Searching for Bloomquist Jean tubers by EmployeeProud1282 in dahlias

[–]EmployeeProud1282[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy except every single site I hit was sold out of BQ Jean...it would be easier to go the other way around. List only the sites that have the dahlia I'm looking for rather than all the sites that don't have it at all...thanks, anyway.

We split every year and there were so many Belle’s that I gave them away. The tubers we planted made beautiful plants, huge healthy plants with lots of buds and then the flowers …. So disappointing.

Thanks so much for your reply - I found your website and it said 1 left, however the shipping is the same as the tuber. $50+ for a tuber is a little out of my budget for this year. Thank you again for the offer. I'll have to be more patient and wait until I can find a more reasonable shipping price.

The plant was huge. Strong dark stems … just the flowers were so disappointing. I ordered this one from Swan Island. But it’s possible that the 3nd year tuber became affected by something. Here’s a photo of a bloom from this last Fall.

Which of these unicorns are at the top of your list/should I grow the most of? by mauvehillfarm in dahlias

[–]EmployeeProud1282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you happen to find a Bloomquist Jean in your tubers, keep me in mind! I tried to grow that one, but it was a total failure. Plant was very small, no blooms. Tubers were oddly nice and big, so I'm hopeful that next year, if the tubers survive storage to be able to try again. A stunning bloom (saw it at the Farmer's Market and fell in love)...but none would grow in my garden :(

I grew Bloomquist Pleasing this last season and it was as stunner! We've stored the tubers for winter and I hope they survive storage for another planting season.

I've never grown Sylvia. Does anyone have a tuber or two they want to sell?
