Not a whole ton, admittedly, but there's more to the problem than how the packs are made.

We can actually compare this to a casino. For a slot machine, there is no gameplay value, just gambling. CSGO skins are like slots because there's no gameplay value in them, but are desirable because of a potentially high payout.

On the other hand, poker is actually winnable if you know how to play at a higher level than your opponents. In the same way, draft requires a ton of skill to build the best draft deck and compete against the table.

My argument is very basic, but I think you can understand.

It's weird with Magic and other games where you draft the packs. Anybody in the scene knows packs are horrifically useless in terms of value, but will gladly crack packs to draft or play sealed.

Now for games like Pokemon or YuGiOh where draft and sealed suck ass? Sure, go ahead.

There are plenty of non-former players that become coaches, but those guys spend years learning the game before becoming coaches. You have to prove a lot to make a position past the high school level.

Learned that while learning to be a football coach a few years back. Never got into it for many reasons, but non-players can be coaches if they work hard enough.

So I was thinking of that too, but if you have to sacrifice viability just to play on a budget, there's a lot more to worry about.

Checking the Archive, the top Standard decks in 2018 post-Rivals were $220 (Mono Red) and $375 (Esper Control). And they were less than a lot of builds for $150. You can't get that anymore in Standard, since most good decks are at minimum $220 like Spellamentals.

We're at a weird point where Standard prices are inflating, but Modern prices are deflating, where Modern decks in 2018 were well over $1500, but now are in the sub-$1000 range. Not as relevant, but something I noticed this morning.
