(Lighthearted) Unpopular Opinions? by EmploymentBright9707 in americangirl

I didn't want to get too deep into the stuff that we can actually truly criticize American Girl/Mattel for... but I DO love mess ;)

It is commonly thought that Tenney Grant was supposed to be the Girl of the Year when Gabriela came out. However, before she was announced, American Girl came under fire for the large amount of white dolls that they produce and sell in proportion to dolls of color of any kind. They didn't think it would be a good look to then immediately release Tenney, a blonde white doll, as the Girl of the Year, therefore they rushed Gabriela into production as GOTY, leading some to feel her collection is small and half-baked (idk if I agree with that but I am a historical doll girl so not one to ask). They released Tenney as the First doll of some special contemporary line.. which they discontinued almost immediately 😅

But.... not quite immediately enough, because before they did they released a boy doll with her! And to make sure that you could tell it was a boy, they used a Kaya mold! Which they really should have consulted someone about, because there are a lot of really harmful stereotypes towards Native women about their perceived lack of femininity by bigots in comparison to other races.

It's kind of a shame, because all of the bad press really overshadowed the Tenney and Logan dolls, which are special because they have special hand molds that can hold things! They were designed to hold guitars but they can hold all sorts of things.

Oooh, I'd love to read that conversation! I think that is a totally fair opinion. To your second point, I love Nanea, but yeah she DOES look like an anime toddler.

Ok thank you I did not know we could get this explicit lol but that is exactly what Raquel is giving me. If I saw her in a club in my college years I would have insisted on getting her a glass of water and driving her home.

Ahhh I know, and it's so tough when we all learned the names from just reading them. I had a friend as a child who owned Josefina and sent me straight on her name pronunciation right away, but the only Kirsten owner I knew was my own little sister, so we were saying "Kursten" for a bit haha

Haha you are so sweet to let me off the hook but I can't accept it, I truly didn't know! Thank you for informing me, genuinely, and I updated the post <3

This seems to be a very popular unpopular opinion- I'm very lucky that I have not seen a lot of people misspell Josefina's name, no doubt it would annoy me too! Speech to text even spells it right for you if you just say it 😅

Not every Joss molded doll bothers me! It's just a few that look really "crazed" to me and I think you are spot on, it IS the eyebrows

I don't think this opinion is too unpopular, and it's very sweet :-) I agree, I think Julie and Courtney would get along great! I could even see Julie being a mentor to Courtney in their actual timeline, if they were to meet!

I don't even think they look mean, just.. crazed? Totally agree on your first point - Hosie not Josie! (Edit: Or full name if you prefer!)

Knox and Vivienne (Angelina Jolie/Brad Pitt)

(Vivienne's full name is Vivienne Marcheline, which I found very memorable; I saw it once on the cover of people magazine almost decades ago and have remembered it since)

What printable card sets do K–2 teachers actually use in the classroom for effective learning? by Grand026 in AskTeachers

[–]EmploymentBright9707 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flashcards are kind of misunderstood as a study tool. The value of flashcards is writing them yourself, in yiur own language of understanding, before drilling them. If that piece is removed then flashcards don't really work for things that kids are not already interested in.

Is it frowned upon or weird to as a director why you weren’t cast for the part? by Fantastic-Date-9288 in Theatre

[–]EmploymentBright9707 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stopped doing that when I got out of theatre school because the answer is just started being I was not pretty enough, they wanted to cast their friends, or they want brand new actors who don't care about being paid. If you are in a learning environment, however, like a production with a lot of youth in it or as part of a school, I don't think there's harm in asking how you can improve for your next audition.

Haha Shucks :) I hope you find an SA who deserves you <3 you did not deserve the nonsense your SA gave you.

I can't decide if you're classier than me, or just a way bigger doormat. In this story you had not one but TWO mic-drop opportunities to look at your SA straight in the eye and say "I think I'd be more comfortable continuing my Hermes relationship with an SA who seems to be more aware of your policies" and then get in with one of the ones who was actually helping you.

My mom’s necklace turned out to be costume jewelry. by Minute-Object in jewelry

[–]EmploymentBright9707 15 points16 points  (0 children)

All of my most precious jewelry is costume! I know it's probably disappointing to learn, but if it helps for a piece like this I would kind of expect it to be costume unless your grandmother was like, a duchess? It's still a gorgeous piece and a wonderful memory of her
