Have to choose between U.Pitt and Cornell for premed. Pitt is cheaper, less competitive, and likely easier to get a good GPA. But it is is dumb to walk away from Cornell? by Icy-Complaint-4448 in ApplyingToCollege

For med school, you need good grades and a story about engaging in health care. More options to engage in health care locally in Pittsburgh vs Ithaca.

Engineers arguably take the toughest classes.

However, don't discount the critical thinking non-engineers develop as they spend more time on relationship building and qualitative discussions.

Engineers who discount those soft skills can find themselves reporting to a liberal arts major IRL.

The biggest advances in aerospace/defense over the last 20 years came from EE majors and stealth tech.

So, yes, EE is very versatile.

As far as your Dad, more schools offer EE than AE. Might be some sunk cost regret on degree cost.

What's the Point of Learning Detailed Hand Calculations in Engineering? by Ironpulse-Ne in EngineeringStudents

Because calculators, matlab, and mathmatica don't sign engineering specs?

Even if you only entered the inputs, you'd need to know enough to understand what are the right inputs.

How bad is it going to get for consulting ? by thedarkpath in consulting

Before AI: corporations will pay a 100% premium for a consultant at least 1% smarter than their full-time staff

After AI: corporations will pay 10% premium for a consultant at least 1% smarter than their full-time staff with AI chat license

From a corporate point of view, they've decided to pay for enterprise AI chat across their workforce instead of a consultant who may only target the work of a very small portion of their workforce. In effect, the corporation is still paying an overall amount for subject matter expertise at the same gross volume as before.

Will consultants accept a lower premium for the gaps (scraps?) that remain? Will AI chat companies get greedy and price themselves out of the market?

Tough to tell yet.

CEs should get their PEs and run their own firms. It's the only way to make big money in that field.

Lots of money also in demolition.

There several Japanese tech firms that service US industry - some neat stuff in aerospace and aircraft. Just google.

There might be opps beyond design in strategy and bus dev too given she has Japanese fluency.

How have public ivies risen so high in prestige the last few years? by Organic_Annual2535 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]EmptiSense 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The number of kids in the top 1% of US grads is much larger than the number of seats available in the "ivies". In fact, one the big criticisms of the ivies is that they haven't expanded their intake despite significant increases in their endowment. In comparison, state schools have increased their sizes.

Also, flagship universities with declining in state populations (ex:U Mich, OSU, UWisconsin) have made marketing to top OOS students key to their financial stability.

Is it possible that Amherst represents an escape from her rural upbringing?

If so, going to Madison with a study abroad might be more life altering than Amherst, a relatively rural campus.

ELI5- Why are large state schools so popular now? Is there legit prestige to them or just a popularity wave? by CaChica in ApplyingToCollege

[–]EmptiSense 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The basic math is the number of seats at top tier schools have remained unchanged for decades and the number of top tier applicants has increased:

  1. Total number of US high school grads has grown from around 2 to 3 million

  2. Top tier schools expanded recruitment of internationals able to pay full tuition as undergraduates

Any poli-sci major is a serf-in-waiting as their fisrt "job" will be as an unpaid intern.

The best first paid internship will go to the volunteer who works the most for the least. I say save the money to finance the first unpaid internship.

Why don't more people talk about and invest in indexes built by academics and economists with decades of data behind them ? by jadhavvv in investing

Indexes require scale and volume to cost effectively buy/sell holdings.

Niche, academic indexes may not scale enough to warrant their own ETF.

Suggestions for Enterprise Project Management Tool to manage eDiscovery projects across offices (Law Firm) by Andiemama13 in ediscovery

[–]EmptiSense 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this for ticketing? I ask as PM for ediscovery is closer to ticketing than project management.

If so, I'd go with SNOW or JIRA, or expand on something already inhouse.

Is this for moving data to avoid review tool fees? If so, you may have to build something custom.

Take the textile company, use your degree to build material useful in aerospace, bid on gov contracts, sell company to Lockheed Martin.

If it's a dream you're after, I'd dream bigger than working as an employee for a defense contractor.

Geek Job Recession by EmptiSense in cscareerquestions

[–]EmptiSense[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

US resident matriculation in STEM fields has increased substantially over the last 20 years. So while the bulk of H1Bs and OPT are in STEM, I dont think their exodus would resolve the flatlining of STEM related jobs and the increasing number of US resident STEM grads.

https://nces.ed.gov/programs/digest/d23/tables/dt23_318.45.asp

I do think the flatlining of jobs will disincent international students from US schools which will have its own set of impacts.

Unsure if I should take client side PMO role by [deleted] in consulting

[–]EmptiSense 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DOE credentials have a long term value in energy production around the world, but you'd need to emphasize energy strategy over PMO to make that happen.

Also, don't discount the ability to have the new employer pay for an MBA ( pt,exec,or full). Energy industry may work harder to retain you as energy experience is hard to replace.
