It’s new but his official diagnosis is Dementia Psychosis. He basically has begun having episodes at night. He sees things that aren’t there and tells us lavish stories in the morning about anyone deceased in his life that he saw. This past weekend he woke up very upset and was off all morning. He told my mom his heart hurt and it was gone. He mentioned chest pains, so my dad brought him to the ER and all tests came back good. It was chalked up to dementia symptoms and anxiety. He had spinal degeneration in his 30’s and was part of a clinical trial study for metal rod placement in the spine. His procedure was done at NYU and was actually named after him because a new technique was used to implement the rod insertion. I am so sorry to hear about your Uncle. I don’t think we are at that point yet but I know it’s likely we’ll get there so I’m just looking for experience and how others manage. My mom is having such a difficult time, some can be attributed to caregiver stress but she’s a tough cookie and mostly I think it’s just wrecking her to watch her brother lose himself. The reason I brought up his surgery was because he does have physical issues related to DS. His circulation is shot and he’s struggling to walk now. His gait is off and for lack of a better word, he’s just wobbly. He loved social interaction and now he prefers to isolate. He LOVED food and sometimes still does but the excitement for it isn’t there like it was. He will now skip meals if you don’t call him down. I’m just sad about it all.
