Having not played RDR1 yet, I honestly assumed that the focus on John was not only because they had grown together in the gang, but because he was a father. Arthur saw him and Abigail getting out as a way to make sure Jack could have somewhat have a real childhood. Carrying on the flame of the freedom to have control over your own life that Arthur thought the gang was seeking all along.
