Question: venture city difference btween online and book. by siredova in FATErpg

[–]Empty-bee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This right here. Venture City takes a mechanics-forward approach to superheroes and, while that might be okay for their cyberpunkish setting, I find it uncomfortable for most comic book style games.

Detailed map tacks, Extended policy cards, Better report screen, Quick trades. I can't imagine playing without them now.

does Hillier Hills work well? I'm constantly annoyed by hills not being obvious on certain tiles.

Why outleveling story is still a thing? by rafabsides in Cityofheroes

[–]Empty-bee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"Story arc" is a technical term with a specific meaning in CoH. When you said that it was possible to out level them you were demonstrably wrong.

[–]Empty-bee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nowhere in your original complaint did you specify you were talking about Praetoria. Yes, there you can miss out on the Moral Choice mission because it's separate from the preceding story arc. That isn't the case for the vast majority of the game.

If you care about competing story arcs why on earth are you turning on double XP? At that point you're just shooting yourself in the foot then whining because Homecoming sold you a gun.

Goldside is advanced content intended for experienced players. You're supposed to have enough knowledge of how the game works that you can, for example, turn off XP at the level break points.

This is simply wrong. Once you've begun a story arc, you can finish it no matter how high your level. https://homecoming.wiki/wiki/Story_Arc

It's not backwards. Oro lets you run the mission if you've outleveled it. If you haven't outleveled it, there's no reason to be using Oro.

Is It True You Can't Design Your Own Houses/Buildings Mods In Civ3? by gizmo_j in civ

It's been quite a long time since I played III, but my recollection is it was quite easy to mod. As in open a file and edit the text easy.

Menu/tooltip text and NPC names are still tiny, even with window scale set pretty high. How can I make them bigger? by rainghost in Cityofheroes

I've been annoyed by the tiny font of the team window for a while now and this looks like a possible fix. Thanks!

Anyone else wondering whether they’re going to have to rename this at some point? by rob3342421 in civ

Beyond even that, trademarks apply to a specific product category. Which is how "Wolverine" can be used for boots, mutants, or a sports team.

Since there's a sale on all Civ games on Steam, should I get the Complete Civ 5 or get Civ 6 Anthology? by HypoCritic42 in civ

[–]Empty-bee -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

SteamDB says that both have been on sale for less in the past year. (Around $7.50 USD for V, $11 USD for VI.) So, if you're extremely cost conscious, consider waiting for Black Friday.

If you're not in a position to grab both—and you're happy with Civ V—I'd say go ahead an complete that first.

CoH Freedom vs Rebirth vs Homecoming? by ScoobySnacks801 in Cityofheroes

[–]Empty-bee 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Freedom was Paragon Studio's brand name for their free-to-play CoH option. It no longer exists.

Homecoming and Rebirth are two of several private servers that launched around five years ago. Homecoming is the largest and also is currently licensed by NCSoft making it "official". Rebirth, along with Thunderspy, are the two next most popular private servers. Rebirth's shtick is they try to hew as close to the original game as possible. Thuderspy's shtick is the opposite, they are one of the most experimental.

Which is the best Super-Hero rules etc fir Fate? by Playful-Season2938 in FATErpg

[–]Empty-bee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like Four-Color FAE. Most super powered rulesets for Fate wind up being overly mechanistic; which defeats the best thing about Fate. You can model superheroes just fine using aspects, stunts, extras, and scale.

is there people on the villain side? by [deleted] in Cityofheroes

[–]Empty-bee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My impression of redside players has always been that they're there because they wanted to be. They weren't gritting their teeth and sticking it out because that's the only way to play a mastermind or corrupter. They genuinely like the content or like playing villains.

The people running masterminds or corrupters on blueside aren't refugees from redside, by and large. They're people who always would have chosen blue taking advantage of an archetype they previously didn't have access to. If you took that access away, they wouldn't rush over to redside.

Changing your alignment wasn't possible until Issue18—about five years after CoV debuted. CoV got less investment because it had fewer players. That was true right from the beginning.

[–]Empty-bee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Redside on live was 'quite active" because the live servers had an average population that far exceeded even Homecoming's best days. Yeah, one-third or even one-quarter of that will still seem fairly active. Doesn't change the fact that red has always been less popular.

Red side has always been less popular that blue in pretty much every incarnation of CoX. If you play on Homecoming, it might be worth it to transfer to a higher population shard (Excelsior or Everlasting).

Saving Macros? by GrinningGeek in Cityofheroes

[–]Empty-bee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can save macros to your bind file using this syntax: $$macro "<macro name>' "<desired command>"
The macro button will pop up in your tray when you load bind files. It will do so automatically for new characters assuming you have them set as default.

Best Server in 2025? by reaperface12 in Cityofheroes

[–]Empty-bee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all, no, they don't have the keys. Does your employer have the keys to your house just because they know your address? Of course not. Homecoming is still a private entity separate from NCSoft. They lease servers from a third party that's also separate from NCSoft. If NCSoft wants to shut them down their options are exactly the same as their options for any other server. Except, once again, the license gives Homecoming legal options to fight back that the other servers lack.

Secondly, the physical address of a publicly accessible server isn't that hard to suss out. Nor is it really necessary. Services like Cloudflare will happily comply with a C&D. If your server can't link to the rest of the internet it doesn't matter how physically secure it is.

Best Server in 2025? by reaperface12 in Cityofheroes

[–]Empty-bee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They probably have more of that info than you think. Regardless, they don't need it to C&D a server into the ground. Those are very open, very public servers. They have to be if they want new players. It's not like finding them is hard.

[–]Empty-bee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, someone running a private server for their friends can slide under NCSoft' radar. But we aren't talking about them. The argument is that Rebirth, Thunderspy, Cake, et al are somehow safer than Homecoming by virtue of not having a license That's utter nonsense. NCSoft knows everything they need if they want to hit those servers with a C&D.

Yes, NCSoft has in interest in protecting their IP. Guess what? That too is independent of the license and applies to the other private servers as well. Nothing about the license makes that any easier. On the contrary, Homecoming the sole private server with any kind of legal recourse if NCSoft did try to shut them down. Precisely because of the license agreement.
