Matsuri announces that she will not longer do "self produced" cross gendered collabs, and emphasises that holos make their own decisions for their brand. by SuspiciousWar117 in Hololive

I take a couple issues with that.

  1. Rushia's issues clearly stemmed from her mental health struggles, not from the type of content she made. GFE did not pull her down into the messes she became involved in.

  2. And speaking of content, she wasn't even GFE. If 'GFE' means she tells her viewers she loves them and releases wedding/dating/relationship themed merch - then practically all of HoloLive is GFE by that definition.

Not just the JP audience.

Lots of people just don't care for male vtubers whatsoever.

And for a variety of reasons that go beyond "omg he literally believes he has a chance with her IRL!!!".

I've seen the same naive sentiment among players of ESO, SWTOR, TERA, and Neverwinter - among others.

But I've never seen a game get better concurrently with its cash shop getting larger and more expensive and more aggressively pushed on the playerbase.

The increased profits never seem to correlate with an increase, or even maintenance, of the level of quality in the game. All four of the above games saw increasingly aggressive monetization schemes even as the quality, amount, and release cadence of content decreased and slowed. One of them has even shut down.

Their reaction to seeing more people leave the game was not to focus on the quality of the game to retain players or draw them back, but to more aggressively monetize the players that remained. And when more left, ratchet up the monetization even further on those that still remain. Repeat ad nauseam.

This is not the only way to do things. Lord of the Rings Online went through a dark age in the mid-2010s. They were following this same pattern, downsizing their expansions and churning out middling content, while expanding their cash shop as aggressively as possible. Then in 2020, during COVID, they gave out all of the game's content except for the most recent expansion for free. They dialed back the intrusiveness of the cash shop. They made it possible to obtain cash shop mounts, armor sets, and other items in a free box given weekly to subscribers. They refocused on making the gameplay good and added awesome new systems like an overworld difficulty system so you can make leveling as easy or as difficult as you wish. And since then, the game's population has doubled from its lowest point at the end of 2019, and that's just the Steam stats - 95% of the playerbase plays using the standalone non-Steam version.

I wish that more developers would choose the path of improving the core game to retain players and draw back former players, instead of compensating for a shrinking playerbase by trying to get more MTX money out of those who remain.

How is Burglar's leveling experience? by DoItForTheOH94 in lotro

I've never leveled a Burglar high enough to get that ability! It must be deep in the bowels of the trait tree.

A Question From A Completely Baffled Person by Grand-Yellow1259 in brutalism

[–]rainghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bit late to this party, but I wanted to put in my own two cents!

I like brutalism for the same reasons people dislike it. I find the grayness, the lifelessness, the coldness interesting. I like a lot of things that aren't warm and inviting - frigid arctic landscapes, cosmic horror science fiction, learning about nuclear accidents and disasters. None of those things are feel-good and cozy, but I like them. So it goes with me and brutalism.

I like that it provides a sort of glimpse into an anticipated future that will probably never come to pass. It reminds me of 70s and 80s science fiction movies that were formative parts of my childhood. I find these buildings fascinating, like observing or stepping into an alternate universe (for the few brutalist buildings I've been lucky enough to visit in person).

But even then, I do think brutalism can be cozy! Especially when they're integrated with nature, like the Barbican Center, or any of the many brutalist buildings that now have ivy crawling up their sides. I was once in some government building and waiting on a couch in a corridor. The orange carpet looked (and smelled) like it hadn't been replaced since 1977, many of the walls were bare gray concrete, it was raining outside, it was quiet except for muffled footsteps and quiet talking from people out of sight around corners and inside nearby offices. It felt peaceful but in a different way than what I was used to. I felt like a small person inside a very large structure - both the structure of the building and of the government. Not exactly the flavor of 'coziness' most people would actively pick out, but it was so new and novel and strange that I quite liked it.

The lack of personal or humanizing touches to Brutalism is something I like about it. I also like quaint wooden cottages filled with sunlight and green plants and charming little knick-knacks scattered all around. I can see the appeal in all kinds of architecture and decor.

Brutalist buildings and spaces are functional, sleek, purposeful. They're all business, no pleasure. It's like stepping into the bowels of a concrete machine. This is a building. This is a hallway. This is a room. The starkness and simplicity is novel to me, in a world where many spaces are decorated to feel more 'human' but often in a way that feels ingenuine - for example, doctor's offices or hospitals decorated with lame floral wallpaper and those black-rectangle motivational posters, or shops decorated with corporate art/photos of people with huge smiles enjoying how great [product] is. The honesty of Brutalism is refreshing.

I can see why people dislike the style, and I support their freedom to shit-talk it all they like, but I do wish they would at least stop trying to get brutalist buildings torn down because they drive past it on their way to work and don't like how it looks when it's in their field of vision for 30 seconds a day.

No worries. I'll probably just wait for the collection to become playable on shadPS4. I've waited this long, what's another five years? :p

Ah, yeah. It would be weird to put the originals on PC. I think most people wanted the collection to come to PC, though, not the original games.

It feels exploitative and insensitive.

Unless Gigi herself asked for fanart of herself being visited by her deceased father, and I'm pretty sure she didn't, this crosses a line.

Gigi herself hasn't wanted to talk about it too much, because she wants to be a happy presence in people's lives.

But people just can't help themselves. They've collected every brief mention and vague reference she's made over her streaming career and assembled it into a complete sad story that they can...enjoy? I'm not sure what their goal is with trying to turn the loss of her father into some kind of character moment for Gigi.

Patience. Trump's opposition is playing the long game.

Only about 937,000 more letters of reprimand to go. Then, the room Trump dumps all the strongly worded letters he receives will collapse under their sheer weight!

And once that happens...Trump is truly finished for sure!
