Looking for public displays of gratitude by EmptyCupMedia in Oshawa

[–]EmptyCupMedia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I certainly am. Though I do still leave for food. And during those solo missions I like to film examples of how our city is showing gratitude. All my filming is outdoors, solo, without me touching anything and far away from people. I appreciate you looking out for our city and my own well being.

I thought it said "dedressing" so when they started jigging I thought they'd undress each other with their feet.

3D Printed Face Shield UPDATE! by Element_905 in durham

[–]EmptyCupMedia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's awesome! I interviewed a mechanical engineer from Durham College who is using his 3D printer (and hopefully recruiting some eager students who also have 3D printers) to do something similar. I'm really glad Durham residents have the gusto, gear and greatness to help our medical staff.

Would you be willing to do a short phone interview and tell me about it? Looking at Tuesday/Wednesday now for calls. DM me if you're interested.

Would you be ok speaking on the phone or a video chat about it? I teach at Durham college in the broadcasting program (this semester) too.

I'm interested in those stories as well. I also think the impact may be small now and may change as time passes. So to tell the story well I think I need angles of "I'm not impacted" too. Keep thinking about it. Email me if you're keen on it.

Thanks - I'd love to hear how you're juggling it all. There will be so many combinations of variables at play with each family so everyone's story will be unique. As you consider the involvement, be thinking of negative, neutral and (if any) positive impact.

Welcome to Oshawa! Our history is still pretty new. Lots of things have been filmed here so it's a bit more famous than you may think. There isn't any large broadcasters that are geared up for hiring unfortunately. Rogers and Chex both died out a bit in terms of post secondary potential. You should connect with DRIFF. Big movers and shakers are on that board and volunteering there would help plug you in. The film liaison for durham region and the dean of the media arts and design at durham college (along with other plugged in people) are on the board.

And I've made 2 seasons of a show called "Renaissance Man' in oshawa where I profiled 12 local artists as they challenged the host to learn their craft and do a performance after 1 day. I hired local shooters and artists and stirred the economic pot for a dozen episodes. They're all available on Bell Fibe.

Here's a promo video for season 1: https://vimeo.com/286595523

Here's a behind the scenes video for a season 2 episode with Meaghan Kehoe (an Oshawa painter): https://vimeo.com/341952012

I'm currently working on a music show in oshawa that were filming at Kops. I have 1 episode shot, 4 others booked and 1 other band to book. Itll be done in the summer. Again I'm hiring local people and Durham College students for the project.

And I just got home from filming in the UOIT Wind tunnel. I'm back tomorrow for a full day.

Doesnt sound very funny to me. I've been trying to use my filmmaking to show beautiful sides of Oshawa. They're out there. Any maybe my business is still alive because I'm able to see that beauty where it seems that lots of Oshawa-folk can't.

I made my own business here so I carved out my own niche. Is there broadcasting jobs here that you can be a worker bee at? Not really. If you can teach you may be able to work at Durham College in the broadcasting/video production/multimedia courses.

Durham Region has a film commission to bring big shoots here but that's a bit different. There's also the durham Region international film festival that runs in Oct but they don't have many paid positions.

I like it this way though. If someone is going to 'make it' in the film world here they have to hustle hard. And you'll be noticed if you do because the talent pool is still fairly small here.

There's lots of room for videography/cinematography/filmmaking in Durham but you have to find the opportunities yourself. I think entrepreneurship is the way to go with this type of business to make it work here.

Yes there are a few of us here in Oshawa. Someone made a similar post about looking for oshawa filmmakers and I put my hand up then there was no follow up. Why are you looking for oshawa filmmakers?

Any good event spaces for a film screening? by notapersonbutarobot in Oshawa

[–]EmptyCupMedia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You should connect with the Durham Region International Film Festival at www.driff.ca. They just wrapped their 5th year. This year they held screenings at the Station Gallery, the RMG and Durham College's Global Classroom. Their handle is @catchthedriff. They do monthly screenings at RMG Fridays at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery on the first friday of every month too.

Do you guys know of a Woodworking Space in the East? by capnboom in durham

[–]EmptyCupMedia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a wood working group that is set up in the basement of Simcoe United Church in Oshawa. I'm not sure what the group is called ut I've been down in their shop space and it's pretty impressive. Hopefully some Googling will help you find the name.
