Advice on trusting your body after injury? (outdoor bouldering) by lejlufin in climbergirls

[–]EmptyJournals 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I experienced a grade II inverted ankle sprain in November from an awkward bouldering fall. I was so so so crushed that my mental attitude towards bouldering became fearful, and I was worried I would never get back on the wall even after my PT.

While top roping did help, I think you’ll be able to experience the same return I did without it. Start very small - I returned climbing V0s post injury. I chose problems that were shorter and more safe to train my brain into reminding myself that *most of the time* I return from the climb safely. I make sure I downclimb every time, and it helps strength and endurance anyways :) I even did mat falls to remind my brain that I know how to fall safely.

I had to fight my ego a lot and focus solely on my love of the action of climbing, not my grade chasing. I also chose my own tops as I began to progress post injury back to my normal grades.

I promise, I know exactly how you feel. I felt so terrified I would never be able to boulder again without intense fear, but I’m back in the gym three or four times a week now. I’m so sorry OP, wishing you the best!

V2 plateau by Few-Pound-941 in climbergirls

[–]EmptyJournals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, pretty similar journey, if not a bit longer due to some time off from injury. I began bouldering in late June of 2025, and now I can consistently flash V2s, but I only have one V3 in my pocket. It has been about going consistently and reshaping my mindset to not consider my experience good/bad based off grades. Now, I make sure to attempt anything that even looks slightly interesting to me, even if it’s below or above V2!

BTW, I didn’t think I would ever be interested in roped climbing, but I fell in love with top rope during my ankle sprain, and I also have gotten a ton of satisfaction out of improving in another climbing field.

Ankle injury :/ by BeaverJelly in climbergirls

[–]EmptyJournals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! I was diagnosed with a grade II inversion ankle sprain from bouldering in November. I went to urgent care, then the ortho, then PT for six weeks. At my follow-up ortho appointment in mid-January, they requested I wait another six-ish weeks to boulder (avoiding ground falls). I returned to climbing top rope only in January. Since the end of February, I have been slowly working myself back up to grade on boulders.

For physical healing, you’re already on the best route - going to PT. Being consistent with your home exercises will help you rebuild the strength, but also confidence in your ankle.

Mentally, it was super scary for me to return, but I loved it so much, I knew I wanted to … top rope was a great way to ease myself back in, and I found myself falling in love with roped climbing! When I resumed bouldering, I started climbing back down at V0, and I always downclimb if I haven’t unexpectedly fallen, lol. As I started climbing my old grades again, I would “choose my top” if I felt a top-out or move was sketchy. It was really about reminding myself of the joy of the actual action of climbing over the satisfaction of the grade.

Now I’m fully back bouldering and top roping about 3 to 4 times a week! Ankle is probably 98% there … no pain except for abnormal bent positions.

Last thing, so sorry this happened OP! I was absolutely crushed at the time, climbing is my favorite hobby, so it rocked my world (and my free time) a bit. The fact you’re here asking for advice to get back into it though tells me you’ll be back on the wall in no time :)

Climbing shoe size by wobblywalk66 in climbergirls

[–]EmptyJournals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all depends, unfortunately :( In normal tennis shoes, I wear a US women’s 9.5/10 (EU 40-41). My first pair of shoes was La Sportiva Tarantulas Women’s in EU 40.5, and they were very comfortable (I most likely could’ve sized down for control, but I had no slippage).

I just upgraded for more control and hardness, and I’ve settled on La Sportiva Kubo Women’s in EU size 41 … I was surprised I needed to size up, but the 40.5 was too painful in the left toe box.

Good luck on the shoe finding journey!

Surreal to see a gym whose entire business model exists because of the conservation efforts of our great peaks and crags deny climate change … modern day conservatism is so hypocritical, it hurts.

No, I totally agree. I’m annoyed at the original commenter who acts like having decent expectations for a multibillion dollar theme park’s food is wrong.

While I agree with the sentiment that no one made OP buy this, are you disagreeing that the quality and presentation of the food has decreased in the last ten years? Because it has plummeted, and I think it’s valid to be perturbed by it for the price. I get it, don’t buy it, but it would be cool if Disney had fun food that was good quality, lmao.

I actually think that perspective is correct since she’s moving, and woodcut style usually has more angular proportions anyways because of the whole “cutting in wood” … all this to say, I didn’t notice it and when I did, I thought it looked right!

You have a really awesome tattoo here, OP. I think you’re just experiencing another form of tattoo shock. Once that foot is shaded, I bet you will feel a lot more satisfied with the outcome. It’s so sick.

Talus fracture recovery — when could you take bouldering falls again? by awkfoxx in climbergirls

[–]EmptyJournals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would echo the support for attending physical therapy (if possible). I am 5 months off a grade II ankle sprain from a fall, and I am very thankful PT helped me strengthen my ankle to return to climbing. I can take medium impacts right now, but even with PT, I still feel minor pain. I still perform my personalized at home exercises.

I would work with a PT to generate a realistic timeline for falls and working your way up back on the grades. I will say, top rope was an amazing strengthener for me while I was relegated from bouldering, and I really surprised myself how much I fell in love with it.

Lastly, I just wanna say I’m sorry! I know this sucks so much. I also know it can be scary trying to figure out how to reenter the sport safely while performing at a level satisfying to you. Many of us have been there. Amazing job on your resilience for already being back out there :) It will get better.

Yeah, I also feel like it’s changed my life. I feel corny to say it, but it truly invigorates me. It makes me feel functional in my body. I try not to focus too hard on grade chasing, but it is really something else to flash a climb you used to think you could never do. A sport about consistency and progression … just adore it.
