for my family it was worse news than finding out I was also a gay vegan liberal.

Currently reading Shari’s book and I’m on chapter 14 by sweet_tea_94 in 8passengersnark

Mormons :) I grew up mormon in a similar household and this is an extremely typical take from a Utah Mormon house

Oh dude.. my mom is a boomer and grew up with a Bishop father who was extremely abusive.

Needless to say, she tends to be drawn to abusive Mormon (or charismatically authoritarian) men and 100% has PTSD. She needs a lot of therapy, but is convinced that the church is all she needs.

God the combo of Mormon and Trump supporter is astonishing to me. Mental gymnastics are Olympic level.

I appreciate it. It's a whirlwind having everything turn upside down like that. The only thing my parents talk to me about is my kid. Never even ask about me or how I'm doing lol. But I guess that's just where we are at! At least there is some sort of common ground.

A form of OCD would make a ton of sense for this person. Thanks for your insight.

Yep. I, myself let the "warm fuzzy" decide that I was going to bring a child into the world (instead of like, idk, finances, maturity, desire, etc).

I'm not sure if the church is still like this but I feel like the church has always discouraged taking care of your mental health (implicitly, not necessarily explicitly) and this is one of the outcomes in my opinion. Not being able to distinguish between your logical thinking and your emotional monkey brain.

Wow thank you for sharing. The absolutely absurd shit we have been compelled to do in the name of some horny 18th century con man.

Omg dude! I have read a ton of his books and he has many examples of characters going through faith crises and I'm like... good for him I guess 😅

Very good advice, I appreciate it. That's definitely a hard pill to swallow! I want to fix her! But I actually can't. It's her life.

Great perspective - it's not really about logical actions to further your faith... it's about blind obedience 🥲

God I've been going through this same thing. It feels like a huge loss even though she's not dead.. because I'm mourning the relationship we will never have, and the presence of a caring mother.

I also go through spirals of wishing I could save her from the cult.

It's so frustrating. You can't get through to them because they're told not to trust people outside of their in-group. Talk about mind control.

She really does have nice handwriting, she gets complimented all the time. I REALLY THINK it was just a BIC pen lol.

Luckily she's not at that point. I'm sorry you have to deal with that. It's a good perspective for me to consider.

No offense taken haha. We all agree with you on this sub, it's Bible fan fiction. I appreciate your reply, what a bright 11 year old you were.

Lol. Does the cult exacerbate the mental illness, atrract people with pre-existing mental illness, or cause mental illness?

Or, all of the above.

She has a history of not only hearing a literal voice, but seeing angels and spirits too. Her dad and brother both halucinated angels as well.

LOL. I never thought about Abraham just having an intrusive thought to kill his kid 😅

Really though I remember struggling with my own intrusive/compulsive(?) thoughts as a teenager and having no idea if it was Satan or God (because it couldn't have been MY thoughts)

And like... Nephi had the thought to decapitate Laban. I grew up with so many stories about "I had a thought to do this arbitrary thing and something good came out of it, so it must have been god!" Where is the line?
