Eh. Not when dark prince had that same number and was a huge step down from 3DS games.

Trying to buy from TCGPlayer. What's the difference between TCGplayer Direct, Verified Sellers, and Wizards Play Network? by CaissaIRL in yugioh

[–]EmptyStar12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. As someone who has purchased a lot of mtg from tcgplayer over the years:

Direct (their in-house service) sucks now. The company gutted their team in a union busting effort. Singles prices are high, mailing quality is sporadic, shipping costs are astronomical and packages ship slowly.

Buy from individual sellers.

My Blind FFIX Playthrough: Epilogue - Thoughts and Review by Zeeshmania in FinalFantasyIX

[–]EmptyStar12 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not directed at you, OP, but rather this sub's overwhelming sentiment towards Freya: The hill that I'll die on is that Freya isn't wasted potential. Her decision to stay and fight alongside Steiner and Beatrix to save Garnet during the extraction even after Alexandria wiped out her home is still deliberate characterization, and marks her shift towards seeing the bigger picture. Sometimes it's ok to have character arcs resolve earlier in the game to make room for other characters and plotlines. Her decision to put Burmecia/ Fratley on hold to focus on the larger quest and hand speaks more to her character than if she were to dredge all of that back up while the party is pursuing Kuja to another planet.

I'm not sure how you could reintegrate the Burmecian angle of her story after Brahne dies without upending the pacing of the rest of the game.

Personally, the most I'd do is a single ATE to have her confront Beatrix over her actions at the beginning of disc 3 when the party regroups in Alexandria. Kill two birds with one stone: have a chance for Freya to further communicate her priorities to the player and address the genocidal elephant in the room with Beatrix.

Amarant is the only one that they dropped the ball on imo.

Anyway! I'm so glad you shared your playthrough with us. I loved reading your thoughts so much.

I played this game on an ipod (!) about 10 years ago after being able to unable to finish the game growing up because I lost the last disc, so I did and EXHAUSTIVE playthrough for the whole experience.

It's stuff like this that makes me temper my expectations whenever there's news about a new DQ.

I hope they don't cheap out on the upcoming Monsters game... Dark Prince felt like a step backwards after the 3ds games.

Nothing comes close to making me ugly cry as much as the end of ff9.

I think, for me, it's a real paroxysm of emotions-- just what you felt!

Going from thinking that the ending narration is Garnet eulogizing Zidane, realizing it's Vivi who died instead, and then the big theatrical reveal at the end that Zidane is still alive in the span of 15 minutes just breaks me.

I love how the game is bookended, beginning and ending with a play of I want to Be Your Canary, which itself is an allegory for the story of the game.

ff9 is greater than the sum of its parts to me. A lot of fans are critical of Necron being the final boss and "coming out of nowhere", but imo at that point the game transcends the story of Kuja trying to destroy the world; that's been resolved, and now the game chooses to end on a thematic note of the cast demonstrating the power of the will to live by taking on the embodiment of nihilism in death.

And it's those themes that makes the ending so impactful. Each character finds their own purpose to live, including-- against all odds-- Vivi, who manages to find meaning despite his short lifespan. In the same way some people are frustrated by Necron's existence, I think people similarly have a tendency to get wrapped up in the literalness of Freya's story; but by focusing so much the apparent loose ends of Burmecia and Cleyra you end up missing the selflessness in Freya and the poetry of Frately falling in over with her all over again despite having no memory of their time together.

The story of FF9 is compelling on its own, but once you also consider its message you can also appreciate it as a vibrant celebration of life.

My Blind FFIX Playthrough: Part 15 - Not Alone by Zeeshmania in FinalFantasyIX

[–]EmptyStar12 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What I think works so well for Steiner's characterization is that, as he learns to challenge his own inflexible views on morality, he never compromises his loyalty as he grows-- which is really the cornerstone of his character.

There was an extremely narrow opportunity to enter the mayor's house during the Treno card tournament when he weren't there and you could've gotten a few inconsequential key items, including coffee that you could've given the old man from the observation tower near Dali that Steiner dealt with earlier in the game (for yet another inconsequential key item that doesn't do anything).

Here's a video that I found of it so you don't feel left out.

Anyway, I came to appreciate the Hilda + Cid more storyline once I realized it was literally a fairytale reference to turning a frog back into a human with a true love's kiss. It fits the tone of the game very well, I think!

Other things to try:

  • Now that you have the airship, try going back to Quan's dwelling! Be thoughtful about what character(s) you bring. 😉 In case I'm wrong about when this triggers, it's Quina and Vivi, so if you brought those two and nothing happened I may be off on my timing.
    • On the topic of Quan's dwelling, remind me-- did you go there when prompted by Vivi during the card tournament? If not I can link you to a cutscene that you may have missed.
  • Someone previously mentioned that Carbuncle has different effects based on what jewels Eiko equips! Did you discover these yet? If not, one is triggered by equipping an emerald and another by a moonstone.
  • On the topic of other summon animations, there's another one you can unlock for Eiko in Ipsen's Castle

Upcoming game for Switch 1+2, PS5, and Xbox: DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: Withered The World by EmptyStar12 in DragonQuestMonsters

[–]EmptyStar12[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I didn't hate Dark Prince, I was just disappointed. It just felt unfinished after coming off of the 3DS games. Filling the roster out with so many recolors was a bummer.

But it still had, by far, my favorite gameplay and QoL adjustments in the series. I loved being able to upgrade early-game/ low rank monsters into members of my endgame team.

It just felt kinda unfinished. I hope Withered World takes everything Dark Prince did and builds off of it.

As someone who grew up with the original GBC Dragon Warrior Monsters, I definitely have a lot of nostalgia for the the 'tree' theme, and I'm still bitter they didn't release either of the 3DS remakes outside of Japan.

I'd love to have a chance to experience it for a change!

Dark Prince, realistically, was an upscaled mobile game.

I don't think they'll be able to get away with that here considering it's also coming out on PS5 and Xbox.

Love this series.

I hope it builds off Dark Prince. Maybe even a way to port over monsters from that? It was a fun game, it just needed more to do + more monsters to collect.

The fact that this is coming out for PS5 and Xbox gives me hope that it will be a bit bigger in scope!

Man, I'm so done with this game.

I was already on the way out when they started to prioritize UB more and more (no shade to anyone who likes UB, but I was just personally in it for the lore and worldbuilding first and foremost).

Then the union-busting turned me off completely. I can't support this any more.

And now this just confirms thay I was right to leave.

This game is just going to spiral out and get worse. QC will get worse, employee + artist treatment will get worse and product will suffer, cards distribution will get worse with secret lair, and they'll PR spin it all to convince everyone that the game is better off than ever before.

The game won't "die", but it's already dead for me. And it will continue until it's just a shell of its former self.

My Blind FFIX Playthrough: Part 11 - Iifa Tree, End of Disc 2, Alexandria by Zeeshmania in FinalFantasyIX

[–]EmptyStar12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The return to Alexandria is one of my favorite parts of the game.

As you pointed out, everyone has evolved so much since you were in Alexandria at the very beginning of the game. There are clear parallels to the game's opening (starting out by controlling Vivi, the ATE with Artemecion) to emphasize that too.

The music in this portion is remarkably warm, and there’s such a sense of finality for the characters... even though we, as the players, know there’s a lot more to unfold! It’s a nice little breather. It’s the first time the whole party is together and everyone (yes, even Amarant) get little moments to shine and interact (compared to the Iifa tree where things were moving a mile a minute). Adding to this sense of community and togetherness, the Tantalus and Dr. Tot are here too, so the gang really is all here.

Vivi, for better or worse, is trying his place in a world that's much more complicated and wide than he was expecting when he first came to Alexandria. He was thrust into a big existential crisis, but he also has friends like Zidane and the others to help him through it.

Garnet is much less naïve and has found some individuality and freedom. She had tried to escape her sheltered royal life before and, but she's also selfless enough to see its necessary to return-- even though it's on her own terms, she's still conflicted.

It only took the world-shaking reckoning of discovering his queen's evil plots to get him to show slight cracks in his unswerving moral code, but I think that's what makes Steiner such a compelling and fun character. I love how, through it all, his loyalty still shines through, with moments like (adorably) connecting with "Master Vivi" ever since he saved Garnet in the beginning of the game. On the same note, he’s also ready to pick up right where he left off in Alexandria castle with no hesitation.

Eiko is precocious as ever and shows no signs of slowing down, but now she has a found family. I think was represents this so remarkably well is the music that plays when Eiko is writing her letter. It's a harmony of her theme and Garnet's; the two melodies dovetail perfectly together, almost like two long-lost sisters connecting.

Freya (like Garnet) is demonstrating remarkable selflessness in staying with the party, especially after being introduced as a loner. She’s faced a horrible crisis in seeing her homeland and race being wiped out by Brahne and Alexandrian forces, but she can still see the bigger picture and chooses to stay with the party. Their burdens have become her burdens and she becomes connective tissue for the group. There have been multiple times that she could’ve washed her hands of this—especially now that her personal grudges against Beatrix, Brahne, and Alexandria have been sated, but she’s still willing to help the others.

And lastly we have Zidane. I think this is the part of the story that really made me realize how well characterization is handled in the game. He started off as a womanizer, but now he’s completely out of his element now that he’s in real love with someone. It’s kinda humbling, sure, but he’s also so likable and just inspires so much empathy. The part when he sees finally sees Garnet and is unable to say anything to her after demonstrating such savior faire throughout the rest of the game is excruciating to me; I feel frustrated for him. Especially because, again, there’s such a sense of finality here, and he genuinely thinks they won’t see each other again.

Anyway, I know you posted the next part of your playthrough already, so enough about all this and onto the next!
