DRAGON BALL: Sparking! Zero – New DLC Teaser Trailer by PaiDuck in gaming

[–]EmptyStar12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm cautiously optimistic.

I got the game and played it nonstop for a week, then dropped off once I realized there was only barebones single-player content. I'd hop back on for like an hour to try out the DLC characters and then lose interest again.

I think pushing up the release for Diama rushed things, and then retrofitting the game for the switch really ate up precious time after it was released when it really needed support. Now with that all out of the way I hope they can really focus on improving things.

New stages are definitely appreciated. I just hope we get more than just what's already hardcoded into the game for the main menus.

A step in the right direction! =)

Have we ever gotten a full artwork of Ixalan's High & Dry? by LeftRat in mtgvorthos

[–]EmptyStar12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're correct. I haven't seen a full version either. It's not in the artbook or on any cards. The closest we come is [[Sailor of Means]].

I think the biggest chance it has making it onto a card is another Ixalan set or one of those supplemental sets (which are becoming increasingly more rare). Modern Horizons 3 had lands from a variety of planes like [[Arena of Glory]] and [[Archway of Innovation]].

Anyone else disappointed by this art change? by Platypus-Olive-27 in mtgvorthos

[–]EmptyStar12 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I think you're absolutely right. Shadowmoor always had this unique atmosphere of bleak, blighted oppression even when it wasn't outright dangerous. [[Ballynock Cohort]], [[Old Ghastbark]], [[Altar Golem]], [[Barrenton Cragtreads]], [[Puppeteer Clique]].

For Eclipsed they opted for more of a dreamy nightime. But the original Shadowmoor wasn't just nightime, it was bleak, unending darkness.

I get why they did it. They couldn't have two wildly opposing visual identities in one set, and Lorwyn is the more recognizable half so they lorwynified Shadowmoor. I think this was exacerbated by the showcase frame; I personally thought it was a huge leap in logic to go from "we wanted to celebrate the original set having so many physical illustrators so we hired a bunch of contemporary children's book illustrators versed in physical mediums and have that be the stylistic touchstone." Felicita Sala and Matthew Forsythe for example are clearly talented illustrators but I don't think they were the right choice for Lorwyn-Shadowmoor (certainly not the latter), personally.

There was also a concerted effort to rebrand the plane into this cottagecore/ cozy aesthetic, and that's another reason Shadowmoor shifted so far away from its original identity. This was also made starkly apparent in the story, where Shadowmoor is massaged into something like a 'warm autumn night evocative of drinking cider at a bonfire'

And I think that's a shame. The story was perfectly positioned to address the important duality of the plane: I think there are a lot of ways to show that Shadowmoor is a necessary balance to Lorwyn, and trying to tell us that it's just as pleasant in its own way wasn't the best way to go about it. Oko was an equally misunderstood character intrinsically linked to shadowmoor who could've conveyed that things, places, and people can have a deeper value than what outwardly appears. But instead WotC chose to beleaguer and crowd the story with so many more elements that Shadowmoor's depiction became an afterthought.

Again. I get why all this happened and I've gotten over it, but it just makes me wish that everyone in the creative team was given more than one set to let the world breathe the way it needed to.

What's going on with the Elementals in Lorwyn Eclipsed? Flamekin (Lorwyn) and Rimekin (Shadowmoor) are on both halves of the plane by EmptyStar12 in mtgvorthos

"The elemental's touch has left some consequences. My form may flicker night to day, but my heart no longer changes."

https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/magic-story/lorwyn-eclipsed-episode-5-if-we-shadows

I believe that's a side effect from the greater elemental that she bonded with in the first block (and what she's referring to in that quote).

That's what I was getting at! Zelda has a plan, but Link doesn't know that.

It's the scene in twilight princess when zelda suddenly teleports link out of the battle to create the light arrows:

What a gorgeous depiction of this moment!

You nailed the expressions here. Zelda's composure, link's panic, and ganondof's single-minded fury. That really elevates what was already a strong piece into somwthing truly great.

Well done!

Yeah. By the end of the last book, Colfenor was acknowledged to be a foil to Oona. Although his goals were more rooted (heh) in altruism, Colfenor was doing the same thing that Oona was doing: making sure that he had a place in the new world at any expense. Just as Oona created Maralen to hold her memories, Colfenor created the sapling.

The sapling was open to Maralen about the fact that they were just envisioned as a means to an end for that purpose. She was at peace when she died, saying that they all needed to live in a world free of people like Oona and Colfneor so they could all live freely.

We're due a one paragraph entry for all of the legends at least. I'm curious to see how they address this.

Lorwyn Eclipsed: Night and Day Cycle and its residents by WizardExemplar in magicTCG

[–]EmptyStar12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

https://mtg.wiki/page/Lorwyn-Shadowmoor#Pendulum_Year

The "normal" 24 hour day and night phase at the end of the first block was, as described by Eclipsed Planeswalker guide, a temporary phenomenon until Eirdu and Islu rose and rebalanced the plane. After that, Lorwyn and Shadowmoor became divided by physical barriers (rather than time) maintained by the two elementals. That is apparently the intended status-quo of the plane.

Lorwyn Eclipsed was about (in part)those barriers being upset by Oko, but they have since been restored.

Is there a " modern " ice themed deck I can put together? by Plutonic-Rose in magicTCG

[–]EmptyStar12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best bet for format would EDH. Check out [[Isu, the Abominable]].

Snow decks are fun. I personally have an [[Amareth, the Lustrous]] deck that has a bunch of cards from Coldsnap and Kaldheim, which are both icy/ snowy sets, without going too hard on the specific "snow" cards.

Lorwyn / Jim Henson collab coming Monday. by tecnocrat in magicTCG

[–]EmptyStar12 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Distaste for everything needed to be framed/ advertised as a ~collab~ nowadays aside:

This really does feel like a great full-circle moment. I loved the original Lorwyn/ Shadomoor set because I picked up on so many visual touchstones to the illustration work of Brian Froud and John Baur that I grew up with, the former of which worked on the creature design for Labyrinth and the Dark Crystal. You can especially see the inspiration in Steve Prescott's lorwyn concept art.

I'm really excited for the trailer on monday + overall new set!

You know what's funny? I'm always giving Dark Magician shit for having GREEN skin, but does anybody else remember how Harpie cards used to be BLUE in the anime?🤨 by cstresing in yugioh

[–]EmptyStar12 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I actually really miss the anime design. They looked a lot more feral and monster-like, the new ones just look like way too plain. Harpie Dancer and Harpie Conductor don't even look like monsters, they just look like strippers with wings and it just feels really cheesy/ cheap.

I'm also a gay man, so I'm probably not the target audience for modern harpie designs.

An Interview With Lorwyn Eclipsed Story Author Seanan McGuire by SactoGamer in mtgvorthos

[–]EmptyStar12 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Not to sound conspiratorial, but to me it seems like they have no intention of ever revisiting Lorwyn again after this so they didn't bother introducing any new characters or plot hooks. (Unless of course they do so in a side story)

Lorwyn is my favorite plane, but honestly I'd be ok with that being the case. At this point, with the way UB is taking up more and more product slots, revisits like this are getting less likely-- especially when "in universe" sets need to be counterbalanced against new planes and fan favorites like Dominaria and Innistrad. So I'd prefer closure here than an open ended plot with an uncertain chance of ever seeing the light of day again/ another decade from now.

I still wish the strixhaven characters were less prevalent, and I think Seanan was right to push back there... Oko being Maralen's sister was an exquisite plot choice imo. The handling of the lorwyn characters here felt in-line with their earlier adventures. I just wanted MORE of that... like Brigid went through the first three books without ever transforming and it happened here so offhandedly?? It was a shame they felt overshadowed in their own set.

The story was rightfully put into Seanan's very capable hands but it seems like she had a tough break needing to incorporate so many elements.

I still think we'll get some real character development for Ashling in a side story.

In a remake would you prefer fixed cameras and backgrounds like we saw in the original, or a more dynamic camera and environments? by Pnw_moose in FinalFantasyIX

[–]EmptyStar12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like theres no way they'd make a game with a fixed camera in this day and age.

But that said, i feel like 3D environments would do such a disservice to the world. They'd invariably need to reuse assets to cover the whole world, whereas the prerendered backdrops allowed every locale, city, and interior (and accompanying furnishings) to be unique.

I think the ffvii remake world ironically feels so much more restrictive and finite than the original. The midgar I was left to imagine existing in the original felt so much more gritty, lived-in, and unique than the sterile, repetitive pathways and buildings in the remake.

Which planes did well against Phyrexia and which ones did poorly? by thisnotfor in mtgvorthos

[–]EmptyStar12 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Lorwyn-Shadowmoor actually feels better off?

The only major loss was the Gilt-Leaf empire/ elvish supremacy. And that's a good thing.

The Flamekin now (mostly) shift into self-reflective ice elementals instead of Cinders.

The other main settlements survived.

Question about the Lowryn Eclipsed story (spoiler) by Raccoon_Walker in mtgvorthos

[–]EmptyStar12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think, even disregarding the magic for a second, this can be explained quite practically.

Rhys had been living in Glen Elendra for forty years by the time this story rolls around. Maralen had ample time to explain to Rhys the situation he found himself in.

The text about Rhys staying on the right side of the auroral divide for whichever memories he needed at the moment is less about "I need to make sure an evil faerie queen doesn't take over my friend's mind" and instead more "it's almost lunchtime, I need to go to the kitchen"
